  • Hmm now that I read that article I was thinking about the poor computers who all run on power of 2. What we really should do is switch to base 1024 instead. It makes sense to optimize for the true representation of numbers in these spacecraft.

36.86 pebimeters. Lets make it happen! 🤣

  • "Kids, when you see someone talk about the climate catastrophe or rebellion, report them immediately!"

I know this is a bit of a shitty take, but there just isn't a fix for shitty information constantly streaming in. As long as we allow some insane people that think maximizing profit above anything else to own the means of communication, things are going to continue to get shittier.

  • Maybe the EU should pass some regulations that require hardware manufacturers to open source the drivers for power saving on linux?

How is the situation for modern desktop hardware like Intel 12000 series or AMD? Is there any problems there? I'd like to build a low power desktop PC with linux that can still game.

  • I suspect a lot of the prolific posters are just cross posting curated content from reddit (which is fine). I don't think Lemmy is big enough for famous people yet. Alternatively:

Lemmy has no famous people. Lemmy needs to famous people.

  • I feel like I need more and more "web transformers" or addons or "enhancers" that transform shitty website to make the web useful again. Since we can't rely on APIs and external apps in the future, maybe we could create an platform or an AI that helps with reprogramming various websites.

Besides social media I'd love to see this for shops and video streaming as well. Also reader view has been a godsend. Web is getting worse and worse.

  • Good video. Crazy people, they seem like they've been completely brainwashed through social media. Unfortunately it's always easier to spread lies and appeal to the worst emotions than to argue complex topics and use the truth.

These are seriously dumb people that have no humility and have been agitated through social media. This is the result of negligence managing and regulating social media, the education system, constant lies and misinformation by the neoliberal elites that erode trust and post modernist ideas that every opinion is equally valid so only strength matters instead of truth. This is going to get worse in the future as technology and propaganda techniques improve.

You can't build a civilization based on greed and expect a different outcome.

PS: There are some really great comments by counter protesters who point out that a root cause of the refugees is exploitation and escalating conflicts in those countries.

  • Who can stomach to watch this lol, but I was curious what was meant with these code words.

    https://www.propublica.org/article/inside-project-2025-secret-training-videos-trump-election

One video, titled “Hidden Meanings: The Monsters in the Attic,” is a 50-minute discussion of supposed left-wing code words and biased language that future appointees should be aware of and root out.

I wonder what those words are? Anybody has a list? Climate change obviously. EDIT: gender fluidity, equity plans, critical race theory. Abortion presumably

This sounds more and more like a cult to indoctrinate people into a higher level of MAGAness. EDIT: Or more like a police force for political correctness. Reminds me of Dolores Umbridge.

  • The NYT shows the texts included a nice bit of misogyny. I'd say what a piece of shit Trump is, but he even let an aide write those texts haha

“RINOs” — Republicans in name only — and that Mrs. Adelson’s late husband would never have tolerated that, the people said.

  • Good for Iran for getting some measure of revenge. It was atrocious of Trump to break the Iran nuclear deal. The US defines sanctions or economic warfare as "acts of war" which is unjustified towards Iran.

Even though US intelligence services said Iran isn't developing a nuclear weapon, these sanctions and the deal was done to prevent them from developing. This is fundamentally undemocratic behavior because without a modicum of prosperity a country isn't likely to become more open or democratic. All to support Saudi Arabia (who are worse than Iran) and the exploitation of natural resources in the region.

  • Individual boycotts might do nothing and the situation becomes worse over time because of network and monopolistic effects. There might be an end to the open internet, requiring a specific browser to visit crucial websites. Or you could get DMCA'd if you use an ad blocker or plugin to alter the function of a website.

  • Don't play devils advocate with genocide because of the damage denial can do. Also religious faith can't be solved or contested through evidence, unlike legal determinations through a court or scientific findings. Giving the same weight or importance to any opinion is post modernism. And if only opinion matters and not truth or facts, then only strength matters.

  • I imagine just using metadata you can look for people who are discontent, then provides list of those people to the opposition to contact and mobilize them and get them to protest.

Or target them with stories and bots to turn them into a revolutionary force, but that would be more useful for social media networks instead of signal.

  • I'd argue that weird isn't being used as an insult, but to state that the bullies are in fact not representing the norm. They are outside the norm but pretend to be normal, they insist on being normal - which makes it weird. It's not an insult to us, but it is an insult to them. Which makes it funny.

Fascists believe in inequality based on identity, while we kinda thought we had this already sorted that we all believe in equality now. Like all people created equal. But their need to define an identity as superior and then attacking anybody outside the norm is being used against them. And it IS weird to do that, most people simply don't care if you're a little weird. We still have to learn to be more tolerant to more weirdness and not react with biases or irrational emotions. Respect weirdness.

So weird isn't being used as an insult but as a way to rob them of their power - their attempt to define a new normal. And their arguments and attacks against anyone else are becoming increasingly bizarre, less founded in reality, absurd claims. Comical. Weird.

There is the metaphor about slowly cooking a frog without him noticing, shifting the overton window. Weird sort of resets that. It is more an attack on what they DO than what they are.

  • I don’t see any propaganda here, which part do you mean?

Ok I'll try to answer that seriously.

I mean building villages in areas claimed by other countries is kind of a dick move huh.

The existence of the article itself and the framing makes it clear that the spotlight is on what China is doing. Not on India or US. And no, it's not just me, you yourself interpreted the article as intended: China is being aggressive by invading areas claimed by other countries.

The framing makes it clear that claims by China are not even to be considered as legitimate - obviously they have no claim and obviously they are sneaky. This is a clear western bias.

What I see here is a dispute between China and India (and nepal etc). I am NOT in favor of China or their policies. But why is this world news? Do those countries need our help in sorting out their problems? What are we supposed to do?

And THAT is the push towards "war" or "encircling" China. And this isn't the only article I've seen in this vein. For example China's reactions to joint maneuvers between US and Taiwan are framed as threats and aggression from China. This isn't a question of right or wrong or good vs evil for me, it's simply a question of who's home turf you are on and how to reduce tensions. The US does not have the moral standing see e.g. Iraq invasion and WMDs. But it seems we have learned nothing.

So why care? Lefties complain about too high defense spending, but articles like this provide the fertile ground for a general feeling of fear about enemies that could sneak up and attack us if we're not vigilant and spend. And this fuels the arms race of the other side.

  • Sure but the same could be true for e.g. India. But the gist of the article makes no allowance for that. It frames the whole issue as aggression by China. I lack understanding about the history of their borders, but I do understand how propaganda works. But criticize the propaganda and you're called a dissident and tankie. What does that tell you?

  • But building villages in areas claimed by your own country would be fine, right?

This is the problem with this article, it just assumes that China's claims are illegitimate. I don't know that. Do you? I DO know the new york times has lied in the past and is supporting fascism at this moment. So coming from an unreliable source, this claim should be treated with very much suspicion since it's used to justify a narrative. This article just glosses over the presumably complex historical and international legal questions. But even the fascist supporting new york times makes it clear that China isn't claiming vast swathes of land, but it's merely creeping on the border of disputed areas.
