  • It is not preventable to get down with it, but the vaccines reduce its effects so much that even people with chronic breathing illnesses or organ transplants can handle it like a moderate flu. Mileage will vary from person to person, of course.

Your direct point stands, but it is still a huge win for pro-vaccination.

  • 600 years ago is definitely enough to call a people the same people. The sociological, economic and political effects of exploration age barely came to an end even though the empires have been disbanded more than a hundred years ago. Even less of a duration if you consider how late the British Empire quit being an empire in name and somehow still keeps it in some places in practice. Or how French still how heavy sway on a lot of African, South Asian and some island nations.

The first of the new empires, American empire, became a world-dominion just a 2-3 decades ago.

Until the rest of the world get strong enough to worry about having only regional conflicts of interest again, and not at the risk of some global superpower of stolen wealth coming from the other side of the world, peoples will keep being the same people as current ones in the lives of each other.

White people coming in to steal your crates are still the same, only they do through impoverishment and dirt-cheap prices of corporate agency at first, and military later if the former isn't tolerated.

  • The moment (for the thousandth time) when your country's leader sells your country to western resource firms, licks boots of the 5th US president he has shaken hands with, turns a blind eye to PKK-YPG terror organization support in Sweden and concedes without any firm action for the promises made to stop overt support, buys shitton of literal trash from the European countries, gets kicked out of F-35 programme although being one fo the 6 founding countries because the US wouldn't sell Patriot system at first, then the country still gets called genociding on its effort on the border to provide stability in the face Syrian army and ISIS first, now the PKK-YPG that is overtly supported by the US and the west.

Western hypocrisy at full display once again.

  • The thing is, and I'm not bringing it to say it is anyone's obligation no matter what they do or who they are, but Bushnell was a soldier. A soldier is usually already not as removed from the idea of death or harm coming their way, unlike most other people. Ideally, they are not readily available to put their own lives in the line, but they are aware the job entails duty and that duty may require more than common resources, hence putting the body at risk.

When you simply shift this duty to uphold justice for oppressed people on the other side of the planet rather than to sit with thumbs twiddling for your own country's military orders, it is easily justifiable to use this resource in line to protect others.

A journalist, a psychiatrist, or many of the other life occupancies have different resources they use and can also utilize as a last resort.

  • Dunno why that got down voted even though it agrees with and elaborates on the comment I replied to.

It is just a statement. I didn't even urge, encourage or request anybody to stop using that, so not even pressing on the toes of anybody except really insecure people like the other commenter on your level.

Hell, it is used by those insecure people who can't handle a criticism about their beliefs, usually in context where the subject is women, minorities, people living difficult lives, people enjoying crazy shit harming no one (else), rebellious populations that are directly or indirectly fucked by the colonialism.and fight back with whatever they have, even if it looks primitive in the face of their adversaries firepower.

And here I am making just one criticism about the use of a word that has almost become the Reddit's "this" in Lemmy political environments, and I'm the one clutching pearls or being insecure.

  • The fundamental issue I have with anyone who doesn't understand capitalism is that it is still directly resulting in mass poverty, starvation, wars for resource robbery, ignored climate crisis but somehow the grand promises of everyone being able to become rich beyond their needs or plausible desires is dangled in front of their eyes while they they are shoved all of the above problems plus pettiest sugar grain up their asses.

Given how such people can't even wait 5 minutes in a line or traffic with the physical workings of the efficient and beneficial systems being very apparent, it is not weird how it keeps perpetuating.

  • You won't. They will happily buy tons of utilities, food and other resources from their colonies all over the world, including oil to wage their wars and plastic shit to use once and throw, for dirt cheap. When you block their pleasure and oppression toys, they will cry "think of the children, think of the environment, you barbarians that can't carpet bomb or nuke people to stand behind your claims!" while ordering the newest Iphone on their way to change their 3 year old cars for whatever came out this week.

  • Hey, Februarians have to wait a year + January. Think about Mayers who have to wait a year, then see Januarians,.Februarians, Martians and Fools celebrate their birthdays while waiting.
