  • Ah, colour me surprised that the spammiest channel on YouTube, which is practically unwatchable without Sponsorblock and has always been my go-to example use case for the addon (which Linus deems "Piracy"), turns out to have incredibly shady advertising practices. And incredibly shady practices in general.

  • Honestly, good.

    Rather than holding the community over on Reddit hostage, let people be there and discuss things there if they want to. It's up to the individual whether or not to protest. Make Lemmy a better place to be than Reddit (probably not difficult if moderation over there goes to shit and everywhere gets filled with spam and trolls) and the users will come without the need to be all authoritarian about it. It's very frustrating for innocent users who are less into the politics just looking for some old bit of info and running into private communities everwhere

  • Musk is a perfect, high profile example of how disingenuous most "free speech" proponents are.

    The actual, unbiased, actual-town-square concept of free speech like being able to speak up against your government is good and important, of course it is - but that's not what people are referring to on social media, imageboards, etc. They're referring to being able to slur minorities without being criticised, and wouldn't bat an eye at shutting out "libs".

  • Interesting the level of outrage. I guess if Lemmy's userbase is heavily "Reddit users who were outraged enough to leave a private platform over entitlement towards free API access and come here" then it's going to skew heavily "easily outraged".

    I don't see a huge issue really - the whole point of the fediverse is there are other instances to go to. Some of them will lean more towards covering their asses, some will pop up (and get c&d and taken down and repeat) for the illegal stuff. Some will tell bigots to go fuck themselves and outrage racists, "gender critical"s, etc about free speech (this instance literally says it's not a free speech zone so what are you doing here?). Others will happily accommodate it. Pick your poison.

    Okay, downvote away, but when you get bored of clicking down arrows on everyone who doesn't 100% agree with you, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. You're more than welcome to take your toxicity elsewhere.
