  • I don't like musicals either. But I was impressed that the reason everyone was singing was thoroughly encountered, explained and responded to in a classic star trek science fiction way. It was completely at home with how phenomena are explored in TNG and classic series. They didn't shoehorn it in just to try and make a musical for no reason, and didn't drop developing the characters and story while doing it either.

I had a lot of fun, and laughed harder than watching any lower decks episodes.

  • For dimmers, you either need smart bulbs that do it themselves or a dimmer switch that you know is guaranteed to work with that bulb, it's tricky. Also, LED lights that get warmer (change colour tone to a more orange colour) as they dim are far more pleasing than just dimming since they emulate what incandescent bulbs do. Sometimes if the power supply to your unit or building is choppy leds are the first to show it, so hope it's not that.

Good luck with your landlord, let's hope they're a good one.

  • The math we did was that the price was lower than an insurance deductible, and future rate hikes because of that. We also told our insurance company about it, and they said it reduced our home insurance cost. We halved our home insurance cost between the sinope, alarm system, pipe replacement, and changing providers.

For the sinope, you must consider installation cost if you want a plumber to do it. That probably adds hundreds.

  • It's sync for Reddit, something we've used for almost a decade. But it's for Lemmy.

For us, that means a developer we can talk to, who talks to us and listens, who is talented, performant and responsive, and an app that embodies all of the above while configurable and fast.

Imagine your most used app and social media that you have used for so long is taken away overnight. And the developer left his job to work on sync. He lost his job again because of Reddit.

We all got sync and Reddit taken away; now we have it back, and we are pleased about it, and it feels good to toss a token to someone to literally give them their dream job back again.

Also, your comments of ad-supported apps as misleading sponsors is a mischaracterization, even though ads and all associated parts are utterly disabled if you pay 20 bucks to remove them for life. You don't get to have a fast, cheap, and good app; you can only pick 2. For me, good and fast is just fine. For you, stick with connect.

Most people came to Lemmy because of third-party Reddit apps getting destroyed, don't be surprised about the hype.

  • I'm curious about what fixtures your led light bulbs were in.

Old incandescent lights worked great at high heat levels, so a typical boob light fixture that kept the heat in would be fine for an incandescent. Put an LED light in there, and it can still heat up beyond design capacity and might not get enough ventilation and age prematurely.

The only leds that failed for me were inside a fixture meant for incandescent lights. All our open bulbs or specially designed for led fixtures have been going strong for half a decade or more.

  • I had no idea there was such a thing as FOSS justice warrior extremists. This belligerent and disruptive behavior on lemmy makes me feel less bad about renewing my Adobe creative Cloud subscription and a lot less interested in FOSS as a concept if this is the community I have to be a part of. I used to be into it, but this mentality is toxic.

  • I second this!

Most people who have heard of water sensors know of the moen one. I'm in Canada, and my plumber recommended a Canadian company, Sinope. They were much less expensive and had a sensor in the line and ones you could put in and around appliances that use water.

The in-line flow sensor shuts off the water if it senses abnormal flow anywhere. But the physical sensors shut off the water when it's leaking at that spot.

We've had no leaks, but the flow sensor shut off the water when I filled the kiddie pool and forgot to turn it off. It also cuts short, excessively long showers (that can be turned off).

The safety net is fantastic to have. We can install that freezer ice cube maker without a worry.

  • So then donate to your server. But denigrating other people on Lemmy for offering highly anticipated services is appalling. Ask for donations in a more appropriate place. My server was swimming in donations and told us to stop donating. Devs adding to the tapestry of options on Lemmy, whether foss or not, don't deserve to be harassed because you think people's money should go elsewhere.

  • Server owners aren't the only people who are working for free.

There are people that have made skins for Lemmy, do they get paid? Mods as well, not to mention the Lemmy devs and admins. And all of this is nothing without people posting content, are you going to pay them too?

If all one has to do to try and diminish someone asking for a price for their services here is to point out someone else on Lemmy that wants the money too, then everyone looks like a jerk.

Don't forget, the whole reason Lemmy is so successful these past few months is because the work these devs do wasn't appreciated on Reddit, and we all came here instead. Are you saying all these redfugees should leave and take their money to X instead?

  • I'm saddened at the amount of uncivilized discourse going on in this thread.

You can actually talk about these bugs and development with the developer on discord, and also submit reports and suggestions on GitHub.

Saying things like "fuck this" and "uninstalling" about a beta that has had at least 2 versions updated today is the same kind of useless discourse I'd expect with failed protests on Reddit.

Here is a more civilized critique of one of the gdpr functions on GitHub. https://github.com/laurencedawson/sync-for-lemmy/issues/200

Perhaps you can make a new issue about a reject all button as well.

Edit- this response is to the commenters here, not op. OP made a well formatted and polite issue on GitHub.

  • I've always been blown away by these machines. We figured out the espresso machine 100 years ago. Modern ones can hold the beans, grind them, put the grinds in a porta filter (aka reusable k cup) and extract your single dose coffee.

Already invented in super auto machines.

    And yet here we are.

Guys, go to Costco, get a super auto and a bag of beans. Boom you can press a button in the morning and your coffee is made.

  • I support progress on heat pumps and really wanted one.

I live in Calgary and wanted AC, had to get a new heater and water heater. We priced out the heat pump, and because of our cold winters would still need a furnace on top of the heat pump. Total quote was $26,000 and we still had to figure out how to fit it all to code in our tiny mechanical room. Getting quotes was like pulling teeth, the HVAC industry seems to hate them here.

Instead we got a new gas furnace, AC, gas water heater, auto water shut off valve with sensors and even the whole house pipes replaced for $14,000 total. The heater is so efficient that it will pay for itself in 3 years compared to the 20 year old one that was in here.

I don't have an analysis of electricity heat pump costs vs gas if we also had a heat pump. But even with the greener homes rebate it was not viable to get a heat pump yet. Maybe next time?
