  • Correct, as stated I agree with the good points made. But does make me question his character if his spent the last few months planning this. If it really mattered about the community being mislead it would've came out ASAP, not after his got his duck in a line putting together an ethics page, updating it with content for a couple months, skimming thru all content for errors and then BAM time for the kill.

Nobody will probably ever know weather that is the case, just imo I watch both pretty evenly and it's like two parents fighting. Both imperfect and be hide closed doors just hoping the other backs down, otherwise the show must go on.

  • Information like this gives hope for a better tomorrow.

  • Although I think it's too expensive, this is why we need frame.work to make a phone too (or any company to do this). Great idea, good products, their markup just seems too high imo.

  • Not a bad idea but there are flaws and this also doesn't seem to address the issue of pricing or availability.

    • So you can remove the battery, will you be able to buy one.
    • They could prevent 3rd parties from making batteries that work.
    • They could just not sell battery replacements.
    • They could add more parts needed, like seals, screws that strip too easily, that annoying sticky tape etc.
  • Only because of how recently they have implemented the ethics and fails pages on their website and in the video they don't really make it clear like "We realized how important it is and recently implemented a system to make our failures as public as possible a few months ago.". Just looks bad and makes me think it was planned, maybe not and like I said good points were made by GN. Skimming over the size difference between LTT and GN and how GN still got 3+ errors listed? I haven't done the numbers on the failure percentage but I don't feel it would be horrible.

  • Although good points were made, as I've been following this. I think its also suspicious GN is rather new with their ethics pages etc and it seems like it was a planned attack.

LTT does do corrections, but also GN alone has had 3+ in 2023 errors. Now account for the absolute size difference...

  • It's been mentioned several times. With lemmy federated content it's cached across all instances. Meaning, yes, the piracy communities content would be on lemmy.world servers if they don't block it. I'm just glad they can block per community.

  • Yeah that's an interesting read, thanks for sharing!

  • Yeah but check out the difference in the community rules, that's why.

  • Do you have an actual counter response to the facts I've given? My first comment covers it all pretty well. Additionally, it's not like a single user made a recommendation and the decision was sealed.

I'm not against piracy in general, I'm not attacking these communities. My point is there are very particular precautions that are required to prevent issues running that type of content and it creates a great amount of risk to every instance that is syncing with communities like that. It by no means prevents anyone from making another account and still accessing it all but it does protect lemmy.world from getting into legal issues that could have a very significant impact for the entire instance.

It's exactly why there are other rules that apply as well, for not only moral but legal reasons. The US and allies have quite a large reach, the copyright owners have deep pocket, and they love making special mission names targeting such communities.

imo multiple users across multiple instances for different activities is the way to go anyhow.

  • I prefer lemmy.world outlast then join the group of domains with an FBI seized page on it one day. It's very easy to run multiple accounts, seems like many people have different users for different activity anyhow. It's important to note it's not uncommon for especially pirated software to contain malicious code.

Being outside of the US isn't just a magical protection, here's the US Copyright Relations: https://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ38a.pdf

And it can also be hard for using a CDN, if the content goes with-in US reach that is a huge liability.

  • GOLD, great work!

  • Yeah, I figured I would need to go looking around and try to understand why you say "The population is benefitting". Thank you for the link, I see the EU has made some attempts at transparency, but 15 minutes looking around still can't find actual details on what exactly the expenses were on just by type of expense. Probably in there somewhere.

My original comment was in regards to yours "Facebook and Googke have had to pay ever ibcreasing fines", and I was commenting primarily in regards to that part. And your follow up was formed in a question so I gave more context. Not trying to debate, it's just crazy amounts of money, keeps happening and it's like it's turned into a new way of doing business that benefits government and companies.

Also, not part of the EU, so I'm largely focused on the US in particular. But I do appreciate the response and I'll personally check it out more. Didn't mean to come off as aggressively or combative kind of "debating" or otherwise just information seeking and I apologize if it did.

  • Was this one of the ones advertised for 10 year battery life? Could you maybe share the model number? I've seen 10yr life span, no battery replacements needed before, never really trusted it though. For safety devices I prefer hardwired with battery backup...ya know cause life's are on the line if it's needed.

  • Yep, after finding out about Verizon locking bios I decided to never by direct from carrier again. Plus, these alternative OS options need support. I run GraphineOS, it was quick and easy, never had an issue.

But google probably has been working on making newer versions of android closed-sourced, especially for OEMS. I say probably because there isn't any actual hardcore proof but imo the bios lock is just the start.

  • Yep, I have 7a Pixel with GraphineOS and it works.

There are apps I seen on the app store that bypasses the carrier restrictions though too.

  • Basically the same here like I have 20GB at full speed and then slows down a lot. But at least Verizon requires a data plan with any smart phone. I'm only away from wifi maybe 4hrs a month, I only need call/text not data.

My understanding is call/text goes thru the internet now so they force the data plan.

  • Yes, it's powerful but it has downsides. Why pay for processing when you can just have the end-user do it? I just disallow all JavaScript and give permissions to sites one by one.

A lot of it is for tracking anyways and now most sites use it for styling and animations meaning it's unusable without allowing JS. Of course I use JS, it's useful and powerful but in the wrong hands it's dangerous and no matter what website you go to the JS is ran automatically. Maybe your AV might catch it but that also requires $$ that most personal end users don't spend.

  • Honestly, I'm with Brave just for easy of use and out-of-box usability. I did modify built-in settings though.

    • No account, I can sync my bookmarks even between mobile and desktop.
    • Built-in security/ad blocking, no extra plugins and permissions.

I will probably give Firefox a try in the future but a few years back it was so bloated and I hate having to install things from 3rd parties I feel should be included.

  • Added to my reading list, thank you for the recommendation!
