  • Reasonable assumption, then I better go play it quick! (Btw, the site took very long to load, but now its working normally.)

  • Thank you for posting this, I remember the game, I think I still have the CDs somewhere.

  • Oh I completely forgot about RedHat! Yes, that was my first one too. Then Ubuntu was kinda the thing to go to and it worked for a good while until it just didn't work for me anymore.

Today I'm on Mint because it was the first distro I tried that was able to get the Wifi working on my super old/bad HP Laptop. I started to like it and then also moved to Mint on my desktop. Running it for a year now and since my PC isn't the youngest anymore, I doubt I will switch distro again anytime soon.

  • If you decide to contribute there, it's quite clear that all the information is public. I mean you can see how the website is structured and what kind of information can be found at each entry.

Additionally, the github states the following about the protondb data: "Data exports from ProtonDB.com released under ODbL" - see here: https://github.com/bdefore/protondb-data

  • Sure, I just meant to avoid confusion if someone follows the suggestion to simply try Mint and then goes to "choose your DE" but then there is no Gnome or KDE for Mint to download.

Interesting to hear the difference to Fedora's Cinnamon though, since I've never tried that.

  • I can't code either but I'm supporting new users in selected forums on a daily basis and I volunteer at our local linux event once a year.

  • Great write-up, thank you OP!

I'd like to suggest an addition: I often get the question: but will distro XY run on my device? Then I suggest to boot from an USB stick and try everything in a live session without installing anything. (And if people are just curious how it will look and feel, I recommend https://distrosea.com/)

Also, I miss the mention of Cinnamon. Mint is very popular as you have already said and the "flagship" version comes with Cinnamon.

  • Well, I have, have you?

  • That's great to hear! I hope GTAV will work now, have fun!

  • Have you tried the standalone version of the launcher on the Lutris website?

    Hope you'll get it sorted.

  • That doesn't sound good. Maybe you could try to post on the official Mint forums, people really know their stuff there from my experience (and here too, but since you liked Mint, maybe give it a try, because running a distro you don't like is not a great option imho.) https://forums.linuxmint.com/index.php

  • Please let us know if changing distros did the trick, I really hope it does, good luck!

  • Short answer: no. I'm using Linux Mint with an Nvidia card and it works great. From the games you've mentioned I've played Guild Wars 2 and Warframe with zero problems, they actually ran like on Windows where I had them installed before. Steam, Heroic Games Launcher, Bottles, Lutris - they all work fine for me.

Also some of the issues you're describing don't sound like a typical GPU problem. But sure, try a different distro, maybe your particular hardware setup doesn't play nice with Mint.

  • Thanks for bringing this to my attention, I've been waiting for the release.

  • Oh I see, so it's more about the DE, thanks for clarifying.

  • I'm curious, why would you not recommend Mint?

  • Linux Mint and Pop!_OS are the most recommended beginner friendly distros that "just work" in my experience. That being said, before you install, you can try out the look and feel here: https://distrosea.com/

  • As a huge Terraria fan I've been eyeing Necesse for a while now. Seems I really should check it out, thanks!

  • Me too, but I'm not too impressed. I mean it looks great and all, but the gameplay is a bit monotonous. Maybe it caters more to fans who actually care about the story and characters.

So I'm throwing some Deep Rock Galactic missions into the mix. I've met a player in their first ever mission and tagged along to help out a bit and now we're playing a lot together and it's great fun.
