  • It sounds somewhat like her character from the movie Her to me, but based on the standards set by the entertainment industry it seems reasonable for her to lose the lawsuit. If you can't hire an actor for a role, you can get a voice actor to do a similar voice. This is done often in animation.

Crispin Glover's lawsuit against Back to the Future 2 could have set a precedent for image likeness, but he ended up settling, so it seems the industry is just avoiding this problem instead.

  • I think he argues in bad faith. I saw an interview he had with someone who had a disability where they were both arguing against a specific mobility technology because it could have military applications.

    Everything can have military applications.

It sort of reminds me of people who don't care about an arbitrary technology or research (let's call it Z) and start saying "why are you working on Z, shouldn't you be working on a cure for cancer instead"

9 times out of 10 the complainer isn't trying to cure cancer themselves and the researcher doesn't necessarily have the skillset to immediately switch to curing cancer.

  • Doesn't seem staged. The demo was imperfect in very normal ways. One imperfection was when it was referencing an old picture that he had earlier sent to the program.

I'd be more convinced it was staged if everything were perfect.

  • The only time I enjoyed a toxic fan base was for the show Under the Dome. Everyone seemed to hate watch the show and it made the whole thing more fun. The toxicity had the benefit of not being about social issues and just about how the show wasn't high quality writing.

Off the top of my head, one thing people hated is that the main character hurt her leg and wore the bandage over her jeans.

Man, I should rewatch that show.

  • He appears to have been radicalized. This other source shows his message that he posted to other people before the attack.

"Peace be upon the Messenger of God. May his peace, mercy, and blessings be upon you," he wrote in Arabic.

"Brothers please forgive me for any time I have wronged you, I am going in the path of jihad tonight for the sake of Allah Azzawajal," he then continued in English.

"I am a soldier of the Mujahideen of Al-Qaeda and take responsibility for the actions …

"If you have any illegal or jihadi things online or in real life please make sure to hide them."

  • At the very least, it might be nice if they ask you if you want to go there instead.

On the other hand, I'm just happy that Google Scholar hasn't gotten completely destroyed by SEO yet.

  • In fairness, I was thinking specifically of plants. I expect better results when looking up "S. lycopersicum" than "tomato".

An example off the top of my head is saying pyrite instead of fool's gold.
