I haven't played since the original release, but I vaguely remember feeling the same way. If I remember correctly you get to the boss and he is practically like who are you guys. I felt so let down there was no build up between the boss and your characters.

Frieren is a slow burn for sure. I understand it is not for everyone, and that's okay.
To me, it's the best anime I've watched in a while. The slower pace lets scenes breath and the melancholic undertones resonate with me right now. Isekai has really flooded the market right now and to me this is such a breath of fresh air.
I think with the anime you listed there is definitely an anime in the current or recent seasons that will speak to you. I recommend Mashle. To me it's One Punch at Hogwarts.
You should give the Charmin Strong a try if you haven't. I hate the soft and fluffy ones as they leave lint like you said. I've never had an issue like that with the strong.

I will say that The Suicide Squad and the Peacemaker show are fantastic. Both are by James Gunn if you happen to like his Guardians of the Galaxy work.
