  • If you can boil water, you can can. Jars are reusable. Lids will be your most scarce commodity after a while (you shouldn't reuse the lids after they have been under pressure). Build a little smokehouse and you can preserve your meat.

I don't even worry about downloading how to's. There are libraries and book stores that have this information that isn't dependent on any kind of electrical device to access it. These sites probably won't be high priority scavenge sites to the average survivor either.

Winter meals will be mostly canned veggies, bread, and beans for protein. Salt or smoke cured meats infrequently. You'll learn to trap small game or hunt deer. Surviving will be a lot of work but it's totally within reach of anyone who can camp or is crafty/handy.

  • Ok, CPA here.

Don't file anything without first talking to a tax accountant >with expat experience<. I don't, but I have worked with some great people who do handle dual citizenship taxes. Happy to give names in a DM, but they are US-based. You might be able to find someone more convenient in Germany.

My first thought is a tiny nitpick: we're now required to e-file except in certain situations, so no paper clerks involved, just databases. No one is looking, or you could pop out in a targeted search, or you could just get randomly selected for audit too (that's an unfortunate reality). However, there are situations where citizens don't have to file at all, if they make too little, for example. So the IRS isn't looking for you because they're not aware of you... yet. That changes with your first filing. See my next thought:

My second thought is don't file ALL of your missing years. You may only need to file the last 7. The statute of limitations for IRS audit is 7 years. Technically it's only 3 years and if they then find anything during an audit, they can look back up to 7, so you might be able to start with only the last 3 years. If you're never selected for audit, congratulations, you saved yourself from having to file additional years. But the audit process is glacially slow. If... if... you get selected, you'll first get a letter that gives you 30 days to respond. Go back to your tax preparer and work out a strategy for response.

If this turns into a giant debacle and pain in your wallet, I agree with others that you might consider renouncing your citizenship. **Again, seek advice of professionals before taking action. **

Could you figure out how to do this on your own, yes. Do you absolutely need a tax preparer, probably not. But your situation isn't a simple one, and I truly feel their fees will be worth the advice and not having to file unnecessary years.

  • I briefly microwave my ice cream before eating.

I don't want it to be soupy. I'm going for soft. And I am too impatient to let it sit on the counter a bit to reach that sweet spot of consistency.

  • You'll be fine as long as you're giving yourself enough time before boarding to get to the airport. Just follow the airline's advice for how early to go. Once you have more experience flying, you may be able to cut that time down if you're familiar with the ebbs and flows of your airport.

QR code should be no issues. Turning your brightness up can help if it is being difficult to scan. If you still have doubts, get your boarding pass printed at the kiosk.

It may be more noisy near the engines but over the wings are the structurally safest parts of the plane.

    Enjoy your trip!

  • Sounds like you're looking for the time honored Bank of Mattress Stuffed with Cash or their counterpart, Coffee Can Under the Sink Savings & Loan.

If you're truly committing to off grid, go full analog.

Otherwise you just sound like a poorly veiled ad for some sketchy unregulated money exchange.

  • That... is something that I've never wondered about, but now you've got me contemplating the flavor profile of various mineral aggregates.

I can tell you what coal tastes like, not that I've eaten any. But when you burn it for heat, it gets everywhere. It's bitter and kind of earthy but not like rich topsoil. More like you've been tailgating a school bus on a dirt road for hours. And the dirt is charred.

  • I think the underlying mechanics is the instrumental music keeps a portion of my brain occupied/ interested in the same way that fidget toys are supposed to while simultaneously blocking environmental distractions.

That has made me remember another trick...I have "wiggle pedals" for my feet. They are similar to an under desk bike pedal device but allow for multidirectional movement. Found them, they're called Hovr. A really good substitute would be those elastic exercise bands stretched over the legs of the chair. Like these...

I have on occasion used the headphones and the Hovr pedals at the same time, and I experienced what can only be described as the Vince McMahon reaction meme (the glowing eyes one). Shame I used that power on drafting board financial reports and not solving global warming, but I didn't have that on my to do list.

  • When i have a "have to do" thing I'm struggling to start and I've already done just about everything else avoiding it, I "put my ears on". That is, I get my noise canceling headphones and play something like the lofi study girl on YouTube. I actually prefer something more up tempo, so experiment around with the different suggested videos, but that classic is a good starting place.

I wish I'd had this in my toolbox when i was in school but I didn't figure it out until my late 30s. When i put the over the ear set on, it's like it signals to my brain that it's buckle down and do the necessary thing time. I do still have to take some breaks, and I'm afraid to overuse this since it does work well for me. I don't want to wear out its effectiveness! 😅
