  • I hate to be the negative person, but I think you would be adding so much complications that it would necessarily cause delay at the very least. I'd be fascinated to see if you could prove me wrong, though.

  • That could apply to almost anything in the news nowadays.

  • I agree. It's just annoying when people link to stories or videos from it and you can't access them unless you have an account. I guess I've just got FOMO, but I'll just keep complaining every time someone does that. They'll either stop doing it or block me.

  • Eh, I've decided not to worry about it. Like I said, I only used it so that when people posted something somewhere that is linked to FB, I could see it. I figured I would try to get back into my account if it was possible to without giving them my id, but it doesn't seem like it is so I won't . It's not that big of deal. I've always uninstalled Facebook from every phone I've bought, and only connected to it through a sandbox because I don't like or trust Meta. It's not a big loss.

  • There is nothing more to it. My original account was never suspended. Like I said, I only use it to click on links to FB. I've never posted anything.

I used a DDG email for the new account. IDK if that has anything to do with it. I know some sites don't accept that as an email. I got a welcome email a little afterward, and clicked the link. When I signed in, It also said I was suspended.

I am using a VPN. Maybe it's because that IP address has been used for another account. I'm just guessing there, because it didn't tell me why it was suspended. It just gave me a link to their TOS.

  • I did the email verification, but then I have to also give them an id.

I tried making a new account. As soon as I verified my email (which was a different email than my old account), I got a notification that my account was suspended and I have 180 days to appeal.

  • This doesn't answer your question, but I will take this time to rant about Jackson Hewitt. I've never used them, but I had an 18 year old employee making a little over minimum wage that used them about 20 years ago. His taxes were simple and just, at the time, a 1040EZ. It's a simple one page document that takes about 1 minute to fill out. He didn't owe any federal tax, so he should have received back all that he had paid in that year. Jackson Hewitt took all of his refund plus about $200. I wouldn't be surprised if all the places you listed are just as scummy.

I've always done my own taxes except when I had to withdraw from my 401k for a large hospital bill. I went to a local independent tax preparer that charged me $100, but she had a special code that saved me several thousands of dollars in taxes and penalties for early withdrawal from 401k. There was no way that I could have done that on my own. The IRS gives accountants special "powers" that make them necessary. The fact that an entire industry is built around just figuring out how much taxes you owe is a travesty.

  • The only issue with Audile. Is that you have to sign up for AudD. The cheapest option is $5/month. If you use it a lot, then that could be worth it. I would like to find an open source replacement for SoundHound, but since I only use it, maybe 10 times a year, it isn't worth $60/year.

  • I can't see it. It just times out.

  • It's a constant fight. I grew up in a village. In the 1980s the neighboring city wanted to annex it. The villagers fought against it for about 25 years. Eventually the neighboring city had a vote. All the citizens of that city were able to vote on whether to annex the village. The city ran a campaign saying how good it would be for the people in the village. Obviously the annexing happened because the villagers couldn't fight it.

That's just one example, but it applies to every small, non centralized entity. If a government or a large corporation wants to take it over, it can and will. The one thing digital entities have over other things is space. If someone does take over Lemmy, for example, then the people of Lemmy have the ability to move somewhere else in digital space, unlike the villagers who didn't all possess the ability to leave their land.

  • The "current gen AI" is the key here. How sustainable it is depends on how quickly it can grow and improve. Technology is growing much faster than in the past. I remember getting a dictation program in 1998. I had to spend 2 hours talking to it so it could learn my voice. Even after all that, it still only had about a 25% success rate in properly transcribing my text. In 2015 I bought my first smart watch. The first voice transcription I made from it was 100% correct with absolutely no learning of my voice at all.

I believe that the LLM will quickly give way to a different type of AI. There may be several different approaches to AI before something really takes hold and changes the game.

  • I'm not sure where you get the idea that "the pilgrim thing is all made up". It's was very well documented at the time, and the texts of the individuals involved are available through the national archives.

The national holiday of Thanksgiving has been transformed into part of the retail Christmas season. It was cemented as such by FDR. The holiday is more about focusing on Christmas spending, and guaranteeing annual profits for retailers than it is about giving thanks to God for the blessings that have been bestowed upon individuals.

If you don't like when the holiday is, then you are more than welcome to celebrate it at another time, just as much as you can not celebrate it at all, if you choose so. If the actions of the last few years have shown us anything, it's that traditions are no longer sacred. Just live your life the way you choose, and ignore what everyone else is doing.

  • I really don't know what I'd do with a 1978 Ford LTD.

  • At least my search for penis enlargement systems and local hookers aren't making Google money.

  • Yeah, we didn't have cable in the 80s because there was no cable where we lived.

  • Holy crap! I didn't know that. Now I have to start searching for it.

  • When did it become a rule that you have to be a home owner to hand out candy on Halloween? Where I live, anyone can give out candy on Halloween, even renters and guests.

  • What about when my sense of apathy outweighs my sense of giving a shit?
