  • All my devices, Linux or otherwise, have a host name after fictional a vessel be it water, air, or space. Weatherlight, Swordfish_II, Hammerhead, Pequod, Flying_Dutchman, Serenity, Arwing, Cloudbase, Prydwen, Nebuchadnezzar... I'm sure there are more I'm not thinking of. Nebuchadnezzar is my LTO machine that I can never spell correctly... but that's fine, I only log in to do an annual backup to cold and fresh install of any workstation or laptop or cellphone to tape and store in my safe. Have been doing that for 3 years now. I have to look up how to spell it literally every time.

  • I mean, one of the more quoted lines in LOTR is a human woman telling the Nazgul Witch King "I am no ... man." The film quote is shorter and more direct but the book still has Eowyn telling the witch kind she isn't a man. So there are men and women but also man is used to describe humans.

  • Marijuana legislation has less to do with marijuana as more to do with prisoners in prison for marijuana use, distribution, and or possession. It's a step toward decriminalization of most drugs which accounts for up to 25% of state facility incarceration depending on the state. Why the fuck am I paying tax dollars to keep a drug user in a cell? Why would you want to pay to feed them 3 meals a day?

  • Well here's another fun fact about steam for you then, you can sell your game on steam and retain the full profit of the sale by selling steam keys on other platforms like itch.io or humble bundle. The only stipulation to this method of sale is that you have to sell it at the same price the game is listed on steam at. Steam does not take a cut of steam key sales and encourages developers to distribute steam keys. They are free to request from steam and you can request however many you would like. No other platform does this.

  • 30% is average for distribution fees across all media industries.

In the games industry: Microsoft (Xbox): 30% Sony (PlayStation): 30% GOG: 30% (used to be 40%) Steam: 30% Epic: 12% (the outlier) Google (Android): 25-40% Apple (iPhone): 30%

Music and film industry distribution deals range from 10% to as much as 60% depending on your contract. Yes it could be as low as 10% for people who just aren't that popular. But it's also not at the upper end of the spectrum for media distribution.

  • But we aren't in an Idiocracy like in the movie. That movie was about well meaning idiots in government because they were the "smartest" of the idiot population. What we currently have is an evil corporatocracy. Capitalism decides how our elected officials govern through lobbying. People are becoming dumber over time because of knowing, bad actors who want that to be the case. Education is getting worse, those in charge want citizens to fall in line and they want us to fight so that we elect the same people over and over and over again so that said people can continue to reap the benefits of that corporate lobbying.

Top to bottom the system is the way that it is because of intelligent bad actors squeezing us for all we are worth, not idiots.

  • The same reason poor highschool kids are often part of the school to prison pipeline. Corruption in poor students' education leads to intentionally poor education which leads them to struggle as adults to meet the requirements of jobs that a student who got a scholarship to a "good" school will. I think this is a good idea but it's not enough to make community college free. Higher education in general needs to come down drastically in price and the difference in cost between schools needs to come down as well. There is already judgment in adulthood about which school you went to. Now imagine what that judgement will be like when they find out you went to the free kind of community college.
