  • Second comment: the thing about anarchy is we tried it. It was the natural state of things before Homo sapiens was very different from any other hominid. Bonobos may have an idyllic anarchist society but they have no defenses against those homo sapiens who show up and wreck shit. Maybe if the bonobos had organized.

  • No, some people will want to cooperate. But others will not. Bad actors will organize and ruin what's built unless there are systems in place. The second you have systems it isn't anarchy because somebody is making decisions for somebody else.

  • If every individual is fully independent and self sufficient everyone needs land to grow potatos and go to bed. You can't be truly independent. Anarchist society is inherently contradictory because society means having rules and standards we all have to abide by. If everyone is that independent then who is making the building they're sharing in your example? Are they all just sort of taking care of their own corner? And when the boundaries conflict? Major structural damage, who pays to fix that? If the resources can't be found then some just get wet when the roof leaks? Independence is bunk. Dependency is bunk.Interdependence has a chance of working. Anarchy is just a libertarian wet dream about existing in a vacuum with infinite resources. Instead of trying to create a hypothetical null set civilization we could improve the one that exists, and that allows for MASSIVE changes but they all presuppose that we agree collective society is a good thing.

  • Those rich bastards may have raised 60k, but the city still is fighting and the proles have raised 30k to counter the anti-shelter fundraiser, according to the article. It's not over yet and the city may still get the desperately needed shelter.

  • That's a good point, but we don't have to even fully replace them. I admit I don't know the name of the technology but I see many street signs or construction signs that have basically a printed metal sticker slapped over the old information.

  • If it's acceptable...

  • There's a species of monkey too large for any local birds to predate that still has a prey response whenever they hear a hawk cry. There used to be, but is long since extinct, a hawk that was large enough and did predate these monkeys. There's an evolutionary fear of predation these animals carry even though they aren't prey anymore. I would think it would be the same for livestock. Similarly, I used to have egg laying hens and a rooster to protect them. None had ever been attacked by a predator, but they all knew to run inside when they saw a big shadow fly overhead, and the rooster knew to call out and puff himself up. What I mean to say is as far as their "happiness" goes, the input from instinct vs input via knowledge isn't really important. If the question is "how does the animal FEEL" then what it KNOWS only informs the feeling just as instinct does.

  • I really don't know enough to know, but if all these countries that aren't really friends with the west but have been using the dollar stop doing so, what interest does the west have in maintaining trade? I understand China gained it's economic status because they were willing to do the labor and manufacturing the west didn't want to. Are they hoping that if the west stops buying their stuff the global south will buy enough to make up for it?

  • The article you linked mentions it isn't a recognized syndrome.

*Edit: That's not to say I disagree it exists; I've even felt similar things for a few days after stopping cannabis use. But if the scientific jury is out then it should probably be disclosed that this is the case.
