  • This part:

the sudden huge change in competitive landscape that did it in

IS caused by industrial policy. That's the whole point. They can't keep up with competitive landscapes because the policy made it good enough then they just stopped and since it's protected there's no reason to improve.

Yes, the initial version was popular, but industrial policy preventing it from advancing was it's death.

You literally explained how industrial policy killed it and then said it wasn't industrial policy.

  • I responded to the post above. I hope you take a moment to read it.

But as to Huawei, they're not a government controlled organization nor were they chosen to be the winner by the government as much as the US would try to claim otherwise. Instead the Chinese government shotgunned hundreds of billions of dollars to the entirety of the chip industry. And here's the most important part, thousands of chip companies collapsed last year in China. Those that could compete in the free market survived, those that didn't went under. Huawei was one that survived, but stands upon the corpses of thousands of companies.

Even with outcomes as positive as they have been for the whole of the Chinese chip market, there was incredible equity loss to accomplish this. That said, for China, better to have done this and lost hundreds of billions and catch up, than it was to languish against the US.

So, it's in my opinion that 1. the 50 billion the US is putting into this is way too small and 2. it's clear now that Biden is picking winners and losers. If you read my previous post you'll understand why this is incredibly bad and concerning.

  • I'm glad you asked. The Soviet Union was famous for industrial policy. Or the government controlling what gets created and produced. It's basically the reason why we say free markets are better and that we can't use industrial policy to catch up.

The original Lada was famous for being the prime example of this. While western nations were driving highly advanced cars, the Lada was incredibly primitive. It didn't have airbags, or anti-lock breaking or any safety features. Basically they were rolling death traps. Btw, Iranian cars are basically at this state and are also created with government control. The reason is, industrial policy doesn't focus on what's good for the market, but the demands of politicians. They saw the Lada could drive and that's good enough and didn't invest more into it since there were too many other demands. This happened to basically all soviet industries causing them to fall far far behind.

But the Lada is just an example. There are many other examples like the Russian Aerospace industry, or the Japanese Aerospace industry, or India's chip fabs.

Now, that isn't to say I disagreed with the chip act initially. China's proven you can stimulate markets as long as you don't get involved in the actual production. Basically China had a big chip fund and spread it across both large and small organizations, but most importantly allowing those who couldn't compete to go bankrupt. That's why there were so many reports about over 1,000 chip companies bankrupting in China last year. But it also produced Huawei's new chip. You can't pick winners and losers, you need to let the market decide. Which I thought initially what Biden would do. I also knew 50 billion wouldn't be enough, but I thought it would be a start. Instead, we're seeing Biden pick winners and losers. This will lead to bad outcomes.

  • Yeah, I can't wait till American chips are the chip version of the Russian Lada. Industrial policy has no negatives and totally doesn't create dead end jobs. Never happened in the Soviet Union, or Japan, or countless other attempts at industrial policy in the past. Let's not learn from our past mistakes. 'Muria, fuck yeah!

  • There's 2 errors in your assessment. Otherwise, I pretty much agree.

    1. Their problem isn't inflation, but deflation. As their output is greater than their domestic and international consumption. This leads to lower profit margins. It's a huge problem, just not in the direction your implying.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-27/china-s-industrial-profits-rise-though-deflation-concerns-linger

    1. The brain drain is in the thousands per month leading to tens of thousands a year. It's not good, but no where as bad as your implying.

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-27/china-s-industrial-profits-rise-though-deflation-concerns-linger

So, while yes I agree with you that China's economy is in bad shape. Those 2 data points are incorrect.

  • The weirder thing about that claim is if China is arming both sides, then how are they a puppet master? A puppet master chooses who wins and who loses to control the puppet. If they're not choosing a side, then they're letting the combatants decide for themselves. The exact opposite of a puppet master.

You could argue China is an agent of chaos as they're letting things play out however it will play out. But puppet master is hilariously wrong by even the most casual observation.

  • While correct, what the Junta is asking for makes perfect sense. China will never pressure anyone to do anything, but they would totally be willing to have both sides to cease fire and have peace talks and act as mediators. So asking China to ask the brotherhood isn't a bad idea.

However, considering the battlefield advantage that the brotherhood currently has, I question if they'll agree.

  • Well that kind of attitude is giving Putin a massive victory. We're watching the US claim they're out of money, NATO giving Ukraine bad news, a stalemate with Russia controlling 20% of the land. But instead of trying to understand the situation, people scream Russia can just leave. They can leave laughing all the way to Kyiv at this point unless something changes.

So yeah, we need to ask our leaders are you holding out. If Ukraine has any hope of victory, MORE people need to start questioning the western leadership. You can't just listen to ass kissers, you need to listen to criticism as loudly.

  • Yes, it is. It's been like this for decades now. So the fact that it's surprising and used in a way to shock western audiences tells you a lot does it not?

*Edit: Mind you, I'm not for Taiwan being absorbed into China nor am I strong on Taiwan's independence. I just want to point out the way western propaganda works to manipulate people.

*Edit 2: Essentially, if the KMT has been talking like that for decades and the Taiwanese still vote for them in large enough numbers to win them most of the seats last election, what does that tell you about the Taiwanese people's desire for independence? How does the media report on that? Why are these two pieces of information so conflicting.

  • Because things aren't black and white and reality is all sorts of shades of gray. Most Taiwanese don't care one way or the other, they just want to live in peace. You constantly see this in the polls and the votes. If the Taiwanese people's priority was independence, then the vote wouldn't be so split. This is the reason the DPP hasn't declared independence, it's simply not what most Taiwanese people want.

Surprisingly, most Taiwanese are interested in their own well being. This is why the KMT won so many seats last election. This is why Tsai is stepping down. When they threaten Taiwanese people's well being, shockingly the Taiwanese vote against them. Again, they neither want independence nor submission to China.

Thus, we see the votes EXACTLY AS WE WOULD EXPECT CONSIDERING THE SITUATION. They keep splitting the parties so neither side can make a declaration one way or the other.

As an outside observer, I ask one simple question. Why is it so hard for you to realize that what I said is the truth and not what western media parrots. Why do you believe the black and white issues that your propaganda keeps claiming even in the face of irrefutable evidence.

  • That's because you aren't in a bastion of US propaganda. You know like reddit or Facebook. They don't control the narrative here.

The US does horrible things everyday, like feeding Israel weapons of genocide with no limits. Why shouldn't we talk poorly on US everyday?

  • While I agree that many of them are thinking that way, the concept totally baffles me. If you're a racist, why would you not support abortion for minorities? It's the strangest thing to me. So the real problem here is people don't understand how statistics work.

  • The funny thing is that people think China would disagree with that map, yet that map is exactly what China claims. In fact, Taiwan claims far more than that map, so the only source of disagreement technically would be on the naming. However, China, or Sino wouldn't actually care. You think China is the name they gave themselves or even use or say that term? That was a Western nomenclature put upon them in the first place.

China's largest gas company is called sinopec, not chinapec. So that weird name change is meaningless to them. If that made the west happy so they could take over Taiwan, they'd do it in a heartbeat.

  • What you're saying is true, but misses the point. Yes, larger content creators can get sources of income besides advertising. However, the whole point of youtube is to let anyone big or small get started. Small creators can't get started if they don't have a source of income. So that's where the advertising comes in.

In a sense, twitch builds upon the success of youtube. They took large creators who could get the $5 subscriptions on to their platform. But this only increased the need for youtube to court advertisers.

In a world without advertisers paying content creators, our options would be severely limited. We want small upstarts and cutting off their source of income is a terrible idea.

Unfortunately, our world requires the necessity evil of youtube doing whatever it can to stop ad blocker. No matter how nice it is. And if you as a user are satisficed with the limited content from large creators, as you said, there's always twitch.

  • Actually the other person who tried to disagree with me made a great point for my argument.

Youtube needs content creators and pays them through advertising. If advertising stopped, there would be no content creators.

So regardless of if it's storage or bandwidth, they absolutely need to stop ad block. Otherwise no one will make content for youtube.

  • ...yes, so google desperately needs those advertisers to advertise. And if they stop, their content stops existing. So yeah Google has to stop ad block. Otherwise who's going to make anything for YouTube?

    *Edit as you said

Google isn’t just giving away their money.

So they need advertisers to give out that money or they have no one posting videos.

Unless you think Google will just start giving out money.
