  • And from the ashes, another sentient life form will evolve and repeat all our mistakes, perhaps make even worse mistakes. Instead of mass suicide, how about we focus on solving the problems you identified? There are indeed horrible humans, but there are also plenty of incredibly wonderful humans.

  • Yup. People in rural areas could probably set up powerful radios to connect cities. Crossing oceans might be a problem.

Found an app called Briar that does this sort of thing for messaging.

  • Seems like there is an app called Briar that does this for messaging. Not sure if it does voice calls.

  • I mean instead of using the radios to communicate with towers, use them to communicate with each other. Don't know if the phone's cellular radio could be used but certainly WiFi direct would work?

  • That's exactly what I was envisioning, thank you! I wonder if radios in smartphones (cellular module or wifi direct) could be leveraged to do the same in densely populated areas. Could there be a meshtastic app for phones? Free, decentralized mobile phone calls.

  • Aren't mobile phones just radios that communicate with towers? Could a smartphone app accomplish this?

  • Curious: Is there some decentralized version of mobile phones? Like a mesh network for communication over walkie talkies. Your walkie talkie would help extend the range of nearby walkie talkies and route communication between them.

  • Agreed, or a burner alternate email. If Google didn't give any option other than phone number maybe we could make a case of ill intent.

I think the main driver here isn't that they want your phone (although they're happy to have it, I'm sure), but they don't want the tech support headache of manually verifying and unlocking accounts for tons of people.

  • Can you describe some alternatives to a recovery phone or email? Honest question.

  • Hmmm doesn't seem to work for me. Do you have a link in Lemmy to a mastodon group I can subscribe to, just to try it out?

  • What if you are just a vector solver but don't realize it? We wouldn't know we have neurons in our heads if scientists didn't tell us. What even is consciousness?

  • in Lemmy you currently can follow Mastodon communities

How do you follow mastodon communities?

  • Hmm good points. Maybe moving communities should require admin approval from the instance you're moving to?

  • Glad we have that tool 👍 but it's not a full migration to my knowledge. I don't think your post history migrates with you, for example. Just one ramification of that is if someone replies to an old post of yours, you won't know on your new instance.

Also folks that have established communities on an instance (shameless plug for !streetwear@lemmy.world) can't uproot and move it to another instance (yet).

  • make sure that we get feedback around what the planned changes are, because lemmy.world is yours as much as it is ours.

Really happy to hear this. Thank you!

  • No, not TIL, you're supposed to say QED 😋 just kidding
