  • Even though it's something that's technically correct on a philosophical level for SOME outlier patients, and in an ideal world and ideal system we could implement it well, I don't think our system is anywhere close right now. Working in the healthcare system I don't know anyone who's eager for this or who knows how we're going to sort through the massive haystack of innappropriate requests this will trigger, to correctly identify the few " needles" that it's actually ethical for.

  • And they'd be starting and stopping all over the place, so the kind of acceleration needed to reach that speed would kill any known organic being via g forces before they'd even suffer from the fire. But he's one of the fae, so data on them is lacking I guess.

  • The difference I've seen is that people generally seem to be able to call out the crimes or bad behaviour of any of these governments without being called 'racist to _____ ethnic group'. It has to go both ways, people need to stop blaming the crimes of Israeli governing party on the Jewish people as a whole, AND supporters of the that party's actions need to stop labelling any criticism of them as antisemitic.

  • Yikes. You've painted a vivid picture of the mindset that most people are in when they get addicted to drugs. Even if what you're using isn't inherently addictive thats a vulnerable place to be in. Hope you can find some healthy sources of help.

  • We're running on theory alone here, but if thats true, then its too inert to be reabsorbed by your kidneys and therefore would pass into your urine and leave your body that way. Also how is it causing cancer if it's inert?

  • Jesus Christ this thread. The technicalities aren't the point. You are allowed to find happiness where you can in an imperfect world that contains suffering. It doesn't mean you'll be complacent to injustice. Fighting against injustice can be done without thinking the world is hopeless dogshit. There's satisfaction that can be justifiably had, through means other than smug superiority at knowing all the depressing truths of the world, or the sympathy of others for your problems. We feed ourselves so much rage and sadness via the internet, can we not have a palate-cleanser like this without chewing it up and spitting it out, and then going back to gorging on more?

  • Usually when numbers are presented that way it's because there are many studies they looked at. So I presume there was one study showing a rate of 40%, another showing 70% and the rest of the studies fell somewhere in between those two extremes, with differences likely due to types of games, types of systems, and any number of other factors, including chance. They could have just averaged all the studies and quoted a number like 55% for example, but I think the other way actually paints a better picture of the data. It's still possible they're full of shit, but just presenting the numbers like that doesn't mean they're pulling it out of their ass.

  • One solution would be to pay at the time that you order, but then I'd be horrified at the concept of being asked to tip BEFORE your meal, in which case tipping switches from being mild/borderline extortion to being full-on blatant extortion. So, credit card for deposit would be better, like someone else suggested.

Or, if the point of this isn't to ask for solutions but to complain about 'people getting worse'... There's always been shit-heads and there's always going to be shit-heads out there. Maybe the percentages are shifting, but if so it's likely the not-so-new problem of cities growing bigger and feeling less like a community, and if someone doesn't feel like they have any connection or responsibility to the people that live around them, then this and countless other crimes and social breakdown tend to result. Maybe the nature of the internet and media etc. is making that worse, but if so it's still only a different flavour to the old and ongoing task of maintaining social cohesion one generation to the next. I admit, some days I almost want to lose faith in that, but it's gonna take more than an increase in petty theft to do it today.

  • By refusing to tell the truth to the court, you're basically refusing to take part in the trial. Which translates to you're refusing to take part in the justice system, yet also somehow wanting justice ... ??

  • 11 years. And, honestly I'm kinda grateful. It was time, regardless of the drama, and an unhealthy amount of my screen-existence was being eaten up by it. There seemed to be a slow, insidious change that I was probably sheltered from by keeping to old-reddit, but even then, the whole spez-API-drama wasn't so much of a shock, but more the final nail in the coffin that reddit is, with no doubt, now a full on corporate for-profit website just like any of the other social media giants, and will continue to act more and more like them. I'll admit I didn't delete my account, just the app, and I still check back in every few days to peek in to a few more niche subreddits that there just isn't any replacement for elsewhere (yet), but spending my time elsewhere has been refreshing.
