Yes, censorship is definitely an issue on even the Fediverse. A certain demographic wants the Fediverse to be an echo chamber. Fortunately, there are some instances that don't operate that way.
If people want the Fediverse to replace social media, they're gonna have to accept that there will people they don't agree with.
The major advantage with federation is that you aren't locked to one instance. If an instance censors you, you can find a different one and migrate your profile over there.
Still, the fact that people wig out if you express an opinion they don't agree with is definitely an issue, considering how many Fediverse instances bow to the "free speech for me, not for thee" mentality.
Not necessarily. That man has proven he cares about his legacy. I'd severely doubt he hasn't come up with provisions to try to prevent that from happening.
Valve is simply the last major company in this industry that I still like. Imagine that! A company makes bank off of treating customers and employees right! What a novel concept!
I think part of what makes it special is how it shows gamers what the potential of 3D offered. With the blocky polygons and blurry textures of the N64, Nintendo gave high-res renders to show gamers the future. Almost like a "See how far we've come? This render is where we're headed so jump on board!"
Not a weird argument, that's the same logic you used. Just because some kids might not agree with your decisions as a parent, that doesn't mean you shouldn't make that decision. Caring what others think about your parenting style is exactly why we have so many messed up kids in the first place.
It's wild to me how, when I was a kid, I thought the Gameboy line was the utopian future and we'd never advance because there wasn't anything that could be cooler.
Then, here we are in 2025, able to create and tweak awesome projects like this!
Right? How dare a parent actually care about their child's upbringing? It's 2025, we're supposed to give our kids an iPad at 3 years old and let Cocomelon raise them.
"Ha your parents don't even let you do underage drinking, drugs and other shady activities?"
Same argument. You don't relinquish your authority and protection as a parent because a few losers want to make fun of your kid for being raised with a mom and dad who actually give a crap about their upbringing.
I've come to find that people with their hearts in the right place (such as yourself) are often attacked or ostracized on the Fediverse, especially Lemmy.
How DARE a person express traditional values??? How DARE a parent not want to be an iPad parent and let their kids do whatever they want???
It's mind blowing and it drives me further and further away from Lemmy on the regular. Keep up the good parenting and if I could offer my advice? Find a better place to ask for things like this, because all you'll get are moronic replies like half the replies here.
I'm not saying I support this legislation but I'm really sick of the "parents should be parenting" excuse. Parents can be doing a great job with their kids and those kids will still see porn because of the way platforms push things (not to mention the ease of access of porn, which just needs to be outright banned).
The only solution, barring well-written legislation, is to not allow your kid to have a smartphone until they're late teenagers, and ensure their access to computers is restricted to a public room, with appropriate monitoring.
That's my plan whenever I have kids. However, something tells me a lot of people on Lemmy will take issue with that approach.
And I said elsewhere that I'm not okay with IDing users that way (though I'd absolutely love if we banned porn entirely). However, a lot of social media sites have specialized kids' accounts. In cases like that, those accounts should be legally exempt from algorithm manipulation and given special privacy defaults.
As far as I can tell, THAT is what this bill is doing.
Yet another reminder of the superiority of the Steam Deck and PC as a whole.
