  • Usually the up front cost of the software would fund some number of years of updates. Then after that you would pay for a new version.

  • Ah, that makes more sense. You just get the non-HDR JPG. šŸ‘

  • Yes, if it avoided this headache of ads, spyware and any other intrusive monetization. I'd pay for any category of software I wanted to use for this reason. Which is how software used to be sold before people got used to not paying for anything upfront and instead paid for it in hidden data harvesting.

  • How can any device that supports JPG support this Ultra HDR format if it is not exactly to JPG specifications? They mention they embed more data into the file than just a typical JPG so how can software that previous supported JPG know what to do with it?

  • I don't see why making money needs to be at all a part of using a piece of software. The only transaction that potentially needs to take place is paying for the software up front.

Same with social media sites like whatever BlueSky or Posts is doing. Why is money involved?

  • Sometimes I buy physical copies of books I've read digitally.

  • Nobody signed a contract stating they would when buying the phone so they have no legal obligation to.

  • They’re incredibly important to us.

Well obviously. We are humans afterall. šŸ˜…

  • Purpose is merely a human construct. Please don't take this post too seriously. 🫠

  • Lengths such as inches, feet and miles they are all unrelated to one another so here is my proposal.

Instead of the kilobyte range we would have a bet. This is the size of the extended ascii table off 255 ascii characters that are 7 bits each or 1785 bytes. The bet comes from alphabet.

Instead of megabytes we have the img which is based off the average size of a photo at 1.44mb which is only coincidentally the same size of a floppy disk.

Instead of a gigabyte we have the bloat which is derived from total install size of Windows XP at around 2.4gb.

  • Those groups of people might be of the misunderstanding that people are still listening to them just because they are paying money.

  • Good point. Perhaps at least a 2 drive NAS then. šŸ‘

  • Was Geordi's blindness even a genetic issue?

  • If I had to predict the future I'd say that the fediverse will survive, but Lemmy will probably not get any bigger and then slowly get smaller. On the other hand Mastodon is doing pretty well and will probably be the long term survivor and grower of any of these federated sites.

Threads, bluesky, Post and whatever other corporate creation will probably continue to exist, but there may never be a place where almost everyone congregates again. I think that will die with Twitter.

  • Are you sure? I go to DDG and type "PeerTube" and get a lot of results.

  • Twiddles fingers wildly

  • It's an interesting idea, but in my opinion not the best method of storytelling. It's just my personal opinion, but I like to see some slow build up and maybe some allusions to what is coming without giving it away up front. The sense of mystery and suspense is important to me.

Each individual episode of Star Trek TNG is very good at this, but the overarching plot not so much.

  • I have no problem with this character or plot lines. I only take issue with it being in the first episode. The series is primarily about exploring new worlds and new civilizations and they managed to encounter the final boss in the first episode. It makes it seem less significant and just a common occurrence. In my opinion we should introduce the characters first under more normal circumstances that actually are common occurrences for them.

  • I actually really like the flat colors look with no gradients. Kind of like how the default web Lemmy UI is, but I wouldn't use rounded corners anywhere. Back in the day I spent a lot of time theming my XP computer to look like this. Then eventually Windows ended up doing something similar in later OS versions. I have a tiny blog thing that looks pretty much to how I like it.

What I hated was the glassy transparency nonsense. Windows itself still has a few transparency options which I will always turn off.
