  • It’s state-by-state in the US. Some states allow it if just one person wants to record a call. The others require both/all people to know and approve. The fun part is when somebody in a one-party state calls somebody in a two-party state…

  • The problem is all the existing IoT devices etc that haven’t pre-planned for this. It’s a safe bet a lot of consumer devices with embedded systems haven’t planned for this and likely don’t have user friendly upgrade paths.

  • I’m a huge fan of the original Mission Impossible TV series from the 60’s and 70’s. I’ve watched the entire series a few times now. I can’t stand what Cruise did to the franchise, especially since he basically plays the same thrill seeking character in all his recent movies.

  • Oh, deals will eventually materialize. Just not the deals Trump hoped for. Sooner or later after the US economy is wrecked he’ll have to back peddle, and all those foreign country suppliers will have him over a proverbial barrel.

  • My understanding is that they’ve loaded the datacenter with far more than the local utility can provide power for. So they’re reportedly running a number of generators 24/7 to provide enough electricity.

  • I’ve been called in for jury duty a number of times, made it to the courtroom a couple of times, and was seated on one of them. None of those times did anybody ask if we were aware of jury nullification, or anything that was related to it.

  • The SuperCharger network needs to be spun off into its own company. It’s one of the few positive things to come out of the company, especially now that the Tesla NACS plug/socket has become the SAE J3400 open standard and most EV manufacturers have announced support for it. It’s the only international EV fast charging network that can be seen as comparable to similar gas/petrol chains.

Their battery storage division that manufactures PowerWalls, MegaPacks, etc. should also be saved (perhaps spun off as well). Those are good quality home & grid-scale battery solutions.

Their cars, vaporware solar products, robots, etc. all deserve to go the way of the dodo as quickly as possible.

  • Even in a very optimistic timeline it would take years for Tesla cars to suck less. I don’t think Tesla has that kind of time any more, now that there’s growing competition from big automakers like Honda & Toyota as well as Hyundai, Volkswagen, etc. and all the other EV companies like Rivian.

Those established automakers have a long history of innovating & listening to customers. As their expansion into the EV market grows, they’re going to put a lot of pressure on Tesla to innovate as well, and that doesn’t mean bowing to whatever whims the CEO has.

  • Way too late for that. Too many potential customers will now never buy a Tesla as long as he’s associated with the brand in any way. About the only option he has to try to save the brand is to sever all ties with the company and walk away. But his ego will never allow that.

  • Neither my wife nor I wanted kids but we still got married. The legal aspects you touch on are pretty darned important even without kids in the picture. Health/medical reasons are another huge one. We have a friend who lived with her partner for decades, but never got married. When he fell ill and was hospitalized it was virtually impossible for her to make any decisions, tell the doctors what his wishes were, etc. All because they weren’t legally married.

  • Going way back before high school here…

In the 70’s in elementary school I had a classmate who had a brother about two years younger than we were. In 1978 when the brother was only 8 years old he was killed in a freak accident. The family had moved to a new house whose previous owner collected war memorabilia. The brother found a hand grenade that had somehow been left behind. It was live and blew up in his hands.

Ten years later my former classmate was killed on board the Pan Am 103 bombing.

Archived New York Times article that is mostly about my classmate but mentions the death of the younger brother as well: https://archive.is/ykLi0

Those were the only two children in that family. I still think about them all from time to time to this very day…
