  • I was attempting to compare and contrast. How should I do that without "whataboutism"?

he is not a net positive on society, just like nazis.

Clearly being narcissistic is not as bad as spreading hate and bigotry. Calling this guy all kinds of names and saying he's the same as a Nazi because he thinks he's the smartest guy ever is overkill.

His views aren't offensive, they're just different. It's like a guy saying pineapple on pizza is terrible and anyone who likes it has terrible taste and then deletes and bans people who say they like pineapple on pizza. It's weird behaviour but to say they're not a net positive to society is crazy.

This guy runs an animal rescue shelter and pays for his (American) chat moderators' healthcare. He helps people with no experience get into game development.

One of the top comments in this thread is:

I couldn't give less of a shit what this dumbfuck thinks about anything.

Why all the hate? Because he argues about World of Warcraft strategies? There are definitely people who are negatives to society, but I do not think Pirate Software is one of those people. I do think he has an attitude, but that doesn't make him the equivalent of a Nazi.

  • The only one I know of shut down and the admin posted this message:

I knew Lemmy had its challenges, but I hoped it would evolve for the better. Sadly after 2 years, the culture of censorship through defederation has only grown stronger.

So they shutdown because they couldn't federate with any other instances and considered that censorship. A few people in that thread linked to another instance I've never heard of as an alternative and that one 404s if you type in the address so I guess they're all still on reddit and twitter.

  • He's a pretentious asshole, who thinks he is better than everyone else.

Right, but there are people who are openly Nazis. I get that he's got an ego but he doesn't seem to have hateful views. I just find the amount of hate he attracts just for being a know it all seems way out of proportion.

  • I think this is it. The court documents were filed literally hours after his arrest. Others were sent to a special prison in Louisiana within 24 hours of arrest that apparently doesn't need to follow normal laws and then deported not long after that. The government has been arguing that after someone is transferred to the Louisiana prison, normal court procedures don't apply, causing people's lawyers to be unable to stop deportation in time. Once someone is deported, the government has been arguing they can't do anything about getting them back.

  • Just look at the hate filled messages in this thread. He shares his opinion on video games but people act like he spreads bigotry and prejudice. He doesn't want to sign a petition to regulate video games. He's allowed to have an opinion.

  • Pirate Software has a lot of haters because he acts like a know it all and gets into arguments with people. I'm sensing people are just downvoting this video because it's him and don't care that in it he says pricing games at $80+ is pure greed from corporate studios that will likely tank the games industry.

  • The porn. Right now the porn subreddits are mostly advertising for subscription sites like OnlyFans, Fansly, Patreon, etc. Reddit definitely thinks they can stop being used to advertise subscription sites and just become one themselves.

  • I immediately dropped r/canada after there was an upvoted post about how Canada should switch to US styled privatized healthcare and all the top comments were cheering for it. Absolutely no Canadians talk like that.

  • Damn, imagine your mother telling you she'd prefer being in a warzone than raising you.

Edit: did you guys not read the article? She says her family doesn't support her decision and that her unit is now her new family. This isn't a feel good story at all.

  • People buy stuff for the image. Apple has cultivated a certain image with its branding that people are attracted to and buy their products because of it. I've heard it described as "People don't buy what you make but what you are." The image and brand of the company is often why people buy from them. Apple produces products for cool hip people, not the stuffy old guys in suits! You're a cool person, right?

Something being expensive is often part of the image. People like to pretend they're rich and the more expensive all their stuff is the more they can project that image. It can also be self validation. Owning expensive products can someone feel better about their lives.
