  • I played through Part I and I could only imagine how much people complained. It's got US soldiers following orders to kill innocent people, a black woman as the leader of a paramilitary group, a rough and tough guy who only showed his soft side to his now dead husband, a group of religious nuts who are lead by a pedophile, and the whole thing is about vaccination against a deadly virus.

  • Thankfully most of my investments are in GICs (Guaranteed Investment Certificates) which are Canadian investments with a guaranteed return. Interest rates were jacked up recently and these were giving guaranteed returns of 5%+ which I thought was good enough. They've dropped to about 2.5% and I was thinking of moving more money into mutual funds. Good thing I didn't.

The only mutual fund I bought into is mostly based around US stocks. I bought in at $13.20 per unit and its now worth $12.40 per unit so a loss of $0.80 per unit. I have 800 units so that's currently a total loss of $640. At its height it was about $14.50 per unit which would have meant a total gain of $1,000. Even if the value dropped to $0 I'd still have plenty of savings so I'm not worried!

  • ProtonDB is a popular site for checking how well a game runs on Linux systems. Users upload reviews that rate the level of support along with their system specs.

I switched to Pop!_OS and I've rarely run into issues with games. Games with anti-cheat typically won't work. It seems like Escape from Tarkov doesn't work. It uses Battleye which requires special configuration to work on Linux and it seems the devs don't care to do that. Other games that use Battleye work fine.

  • People can't decide to secede and be sovereign citizens. Why would that change just because it's now a larger group of people?

Wyoming has about 600,000 people. What if they all wanted to leave? What if 1,200,000 people in California wanted to leave? That's twice as many people! Can they leave? What if 70% of a state wants to leave but 30% want to stay? Do the people who want to stay just get dragged out? There's just no nice clean way for secession to happen. If people want to secede, they unfortunately need to want it enough to fight a civil war.

  • The government eventually said exotic dishes with no French name are allowed as an exception. Looking up menus of Indian places in Montreal shows they have completely Indian names for many of their dishes.

  • Quebec government, specifically. Other provinces only require government services to be provided in both French and English but private businesses can mostly do what they want. Quebec requires private business to be conducted in French unless the customer requests service in a different language. Any non-French text or speech made to a customer before they request it can be seen as a violation. They can be a little overzealous at times.

  • I was attempting to compare and contrast. How should I do that without "whataboutism"?

he is not a net positive on society, just like nazis.

Clearly being narcissistic is not as bad as spreading hate and bigotry. Calling this guy all kinds of names and saying he's the same as a Nazi because he thinks he's the smartest guy ever is overkill.

His views aren't offensive, they're just different. It's like a guy saying pineapple on pizza is terrible and anyone who likes it has terrible taste and then deletes and bans people who say they like pineapple on pizza. It's weird behaviour but to say they're not a net positive to society is crazy.

This guy runs an animal rescue shelter and pays for his (American) chat moderators' healthcare. He helps people with no experience get into game development.

One of the top comments in this thread is:

I couldn't give less of a shit what this dumbfuck thinks about anything.

Why all the hate? Because he argues about World of Warcraft strategies? There are definitely people who are negatives to society, but I do not think Pirate Software is one of those people. I do think he has an attitude, but that doesn't make him the equivalent of a Nazi.

  • The only one I know of shut down and the admin posted this message:

I knew Lemmy had its challenges, but I hoped it would evolve for the better. Sadly after 2 years, the culture of censorship through defederation has only grown stronger.

So they shutdown because they couldn't federate with any other instances and considered that censorship. A few people in that thread linked to another instance I've never heard of as an alternative and that one 404s if you type in the address so I guess they're all still on reddit and twitter.

  • He's a pretentious asshole, who thinks he is better than everyone else.

Right, but there are people who are openly Nazis. I get that he's got an ego but he doesn't seem to have hateful views. I just find the amount of hate he attracts just for being a know it all seems way out of proportion.
