  • The most common use for AI in the future will be sifting through all the AI sludge to find content actually made by a human.

I can see adverts being created specifically for viewers of one show in the near future.

  • They were oddly quiet when the project got canned, and there were even a few admissions that the cost of the project had blown out to an unacceptable level.

I think Labour know their handling of the project will be brought up again if they protest.

  • That's been done in a way with a catamaran service, the Fast Cat ferries were brought in to compete with them. I think they sailed from Porirua.

Part of the problem is you would have to base yourself in Port Underwood, which is kinda the middle of nowhere, which would erase some of the time savings.

  • We've had far smaller vessels in the past that have been rail enabled though, even smaller than what we currently have.

An argument against moving is we wouldn't just have to build the port, we would need road, rail, and all the utilities as well, whereas in Picton they're already there.

  • If our government managed to blow out the projected cost of upgrading our existing infrastructure by more than the cost of the boats themselves, can you imagine what they'd do if they tried to build a whole new port somewhere?

Although I do like the idea of moving to somewhere like Port Underwood.

  • These fuckers really are on a speed run to be the first single term government we've had since the 70s.

And being told you have to deal with two hours of commuting because a bunch of Cafés are struggling must feel great, too.

  • 10% for the next 25 years is an insane amount of money, and no way will it be cost effective.

We have a habit in NZ of completely over-speccing projects, then either cancelling them or never proceeding in the first place. It's what we did with the ferries, it's what we did with that idiotic cycle bridge idea, the Petone-Grenada road... And now this. Which will get binned the moment a Labour coalition takes over.

The spec for the Petone-Grenada road initially called for it to be 100 km/h end to end, which is completely over the top considering the terrain the road would traverse.

At least the Melling Link project seems to be moving.
