  • I have a 7 seat tandem bicycle and tow a wagon on my grocery trips. Don't mind the fact that the nearest Walmart is a 14 mile trip since I can't take the highway on my 7 seat bicycle, that's not relevant. I just have to keep in mind that as my toddlers grow their pedals and seats need to be adjusted, but at least they should have more power to drive us up 15° grades as they grow. Thank goodness we will never have to leave our home in any case of emergency because our nearest hospital is only 10 miles away, well, make that 20 miles since we can't use the highway. At least we have the consolation of only getting 8' of snow each winter. Could be worse. Just gotta get my 4 year old to use his weight for traction. So long as we have public transport we should be just fine. All I have to do now is lobby my government for the infrastructure to create public transport. That should be easy. I mean it's one infrastructure, what could it cost? $10?

  • The corporate bio industry is so fucked up I can't even begin to describe it. I tell my friends and family stories, but I sound like an insane person to them. The scale at which money is thrown around is just too large for most people to imagine.

Like this: imagine a worker that makes less than $35k per year processes, and is soley responsible for $20M in products, per month. Product that people all around the world not only use, but ingest. Now imagine that that one worker is the only one in the world who knows how that product is processed. That's how bio manufacturers work.

  • In the bio industries R&D has almost exclusively become just the D. We like to think that there are a bunch of scientists doing lifelong, painstaking research to develop new drugs or treatments within the labs at Pfizer, Merk, Lilly, or whatever, but a significant portion of the research is done at small independent or school funded labs.

Once one of those small labs creates a decent treatment that will likely pass government testing, a large corp will buy it and say "We just made this brand new thing!". Really though, their R&D budget is spent on acquisition, production, supply chain development, and marketing.

  • Late reply, but no, not unless you are parked on a steep hill without any sidewalks. Leaving it parked in gear puts a great deal of stress on the clutch. Clutches aren't very fun or easy to replace. If you're on a hill with a sidewalk you should turn your front tires away from sidewalk on the incline, and towards the sidewalk on the decline.

  • It isn't talked about as much as it used to, but in my own life, I've had multiple people prescribed SSRIs that didn't need them. My wife is now being prescribed SSRIs for a bout of anxiety, and although she's nearly back to her old self without taking them, her psychiatrist is still pushing her to take them. The side effects of them, and the withdrawal from them are often not worth the investment. It takes weeks for them to start working, and getting off of them can often cause problems worse than the problems that prompted taking them. I've had multiple people close to me become suicidal when trying to stop taking them, when they weren't even close to that point before.

  • You reminded me of a video news story from the early 2000s where the news station interviewed a guy, who panhandled while pretending to be a wheelchair bound homeless person in front of Walmart, as a sort of "gotcha" journalism piece. He was totally open and honest about it and was chuckling the entire time. At the end of the piece they asked "so now they we have outed you on tv, how are you going to trick people into giving you money?" He replied, "I'm just going to go over there (while pointing to adjacent stores). "And you think you will get people to give you money?" "Yeah, no one knows who I am and people forget so quickly that it won't effect me". (These aren't exact quotes.)

In a way Trump does the same thing. Everyone forgets his past actions quickly, blames the outcomes on the other party, and just moves on to different allegations he can spin. There's so much news surrounding him theres little time to actually interpret his actions, and he can just shift gears to another group of downtrodden citizens to swindle if he pisses his supporters off.

  • My kid and his friends were convinced they would get $100 of free stuff from Temu, but only if they got 10 people to download the app. I tried telling them it was bullshit marketing but since they "heard so and so got $100 then it will work.". I downloaded it just to get them to shut up and deleted it.

Temu. Fucking Temu? It's the dollar store wish.com and that's saying something.

Anyways, it obviously didn't work and haven't heard about Temu since, then I'm pretty sure they realize their mistake.
