  • What happens when the trial ends? Windows won't load? Would brands like Dell/HP/Fujitsu/Acer really agree that, their customer service would be full of old people complaining that their laptop is not working.

  • I agree, corpo world is already 100% in subscription mode and consumers buy windows through OEM. If you buy OEM laptop, how would you sell subscription windows with it? I see it as a no go, it would force OEM laptops to be sold with Linux.

If you sell updates through subscription, you would end up in 2000's when malwares infected the whole internet with non-patched windows machines. This hurts your PR so poorly that I don't think they are that stupid.

Of course they are thinking their ass off how they could convert consumers to subscription, but I don't see way to do it.

  • GDPR cannot override Finnish law (or any EU nations law). And Finnish law states that tax info is public.

    Included infos are:

    • Person's name, year of birth, and province
    • Income and capital income taxed in state taxation
    • Income taxed in municipal taxation
    • Income tax
    • Municipal tax
    • Total amount of taxed and charged fees
    • Total amount of prepayments
    • Amount to be paid or refunded in tax collection, i.e., remaining tax or tax refund

Edit: maybe wrote poorly, GDPR on course override any Finnish privacy laws, but GDPR has exceptions if local nations law has requirements for data, i.e. police, security, military and government.

  • If those users are just dead weight to them, it makes business sense to even convert 10% them to their main ad filled product, and let the 90% go away. They want to go public and sell, they are definitely last stage of pulling a cash grab.

  • In Finland you get paid 1.5x your normal monthly salary in the month you are in vacation. History of it is that to ensure you continue working after the vacation.

Edit: it is not in the law, it is just something that unions have negotiated

  • Why would protection service limit his movement? He can just jump to his private plane and fly to Russia. He definitely will extend this BS as long as possible and collect money from gullible people to "fund" his defence (meaning that he pockets the money)

  • Fediverse adds level of complexity on it, like you mention.

Malicious Lemmy instance could man-in-the-middle by providing it's public key in behalf of the user in other side. Normally this can be mitigated by CA, but CA doesn't fit very well in decentralized system.

You could add AES with users own password, but problem is that same malicious instance could also steal users password.

IMHO false sense of privacy is worst than knowing that stuff is unsecure. Again in my opinion fediverse is comparable to yelling in town square.
