The price does sound high, but I know a lot of Japanese stuff was overpriced back in the day, their economy had some situation.
Was Go seen as like a luxury game? Or are Go players considered willing to spend extra for their hobby? Wild that Koei made their own console & everything for it. Chess game was out on the original Game Boy in 1991, but I know Go can demand more CPU than chess.
To be honest I've never thought of it as a trademark thing. I know java is a trademark but can't think of other languages that are. I bet all the Microsoft dot net ones are.
This is the situation that the video game history foundation made their famous study, to have as ammunition for their debate in favor for libraries and research and historians. What a sad ending, I hope they find another way in the future.
