  • Files documenting the worst abuses at residential schools are set to be destroyed in 2027 and, despite a multi-year outreach, some survivors say they didn't know they could opt to have their files preserved.

Of the 38,000 people who filed claims with the IAP, 90 per cent had a hearing or settlement negotiation, according to the IAP website.

The process was made confidential so survivors would be comfortable sharing painful and personal details. It also meant that any people associated with the schools who were accused of abuse would not have those details made public.

The question of what to do with the files afterward arrived at the Supreme Court in 2017. The NCTR and the Canadian government opposed the destruction of the files, while many Catholic organizations, lawyers who acted for IAP claimants and the Assembly of First Nations supported destroying them.

  • Federal judges ruled Thursday that Alabama intentionally diluted the voting strength of Black residents when it drew congressional lines and said the state must continue using a court-ordered map that led to the election of the state’s second Black congressman.

  • There's a lot of countries, like Canada, that run on a social democracy as well. It's supposed to be a well-regulated type of government but unfortunately capitalism has a heavy hand on the steering wheel right now.

  • Shouldn't laws be (almost) immutable? As in the only way they can be altered is through the courts or by Congress?

If that isn't the case, and things being as they are, the law is meaningless when it comes to Trump. He ignores rulings he doesn't like, outright disobeys court-ordered actions, lies to the court (through lawyers) and lies to Congress and Americans all the time.

  • To me, this whole thing has nothing to do with Diddy so much as it is about a judge who is uncomfortable with the fact that there are valid criticisms to be had surrounding race and the courts.

Here's the thing tho, that lawyer isn't even part of the defense team. He's simply a spectator in the courtroom who happens to be a lawyer and that's what the judge is holding him accountable for, ie: he should know the rules and keep his mouth shut.

  • I think we could give some leeway for a lawyer pointing out the racial politics of having 6 white female prosecutors outside the fucking courtroom

If he had said something about 6 white male prosecutors would you have still said the same thing? Probably not.

  • The company staffed mental health and other medical positions with low-level nursing assistants trained to perform basic tasks like taking vital signs, but not to diagnose or assess medical conditions.

Hire cheap labour, charge top dollar for the cheap labour, and murder clients on request.

    America in a nutshell.
