If you can get more than a page or three out of the communities on Lemmy, I would be shocked.

Ugh. I've run into this. Even when they are actually speaking English, no one would actually call it understandable English. Very common in technical and engineering related subjects.

Is it expensive because it is higher quality, or is it expensive because of marketing BS?

I could absolutely see very expensive ones being the price they are simply because of marketing, but mid-tier brands can be very good. I personally swear by the one that advertises individually wrapped coils (I think Sealy). Have one now and had one before and they are incredibly comfy. I do not think the foam ones are particularly good.

Curious what kind of apps can't you run? Are we talking 2FA apps? Banking apps? NFC stuff?

You want to mutilate people who have a mental illness. You make me sick.

The idea is nice and all, but just keep your phone longer. After 3 years or so, do a factory reset and reinstall ONLY the apps you actually use. That should get you a good year more out of the phone before it starts to get too old. The biggest issue is the lack of seoftware updates. Not getting a new OS is one thing, but the lack of security updates is the biggest problem. Lots of software that people use on a daily basis will stop functioning if they see your OS is behind in security. Unfortunately that's the problem. Not the hardware, but rather the software.

Here is the problem with your argument.

In a rather short time, EV's won't be a choice. Depending upon the state or country one lives in, a whole ton of places are setting 2030 or 2035 with when the sale of new ICE vehicles will be prohibited. And on top of that, almost all car makers have stated that they will end their ICE production around that time as well. OK, so you admit that not everyone has the same commute. On top of that, not everyone has a garage. Or even a parking space. Some live an hour away from civilization. Those groups individually might be a small percent of vehicle buyers, but together, they represent a fairly significant number of consumers. But if you outright ban the sale of EVs altogether, then what are those people going to do? You are claiming that even with a 10% drop you'll be OK, but even with your full total range when new, it won't work with some people's lifestyles and living situations.

Cops definitely escalated this issue beyond what it should have been.... BUT instead of saying that, seemingly 1/2 the folks jump conclusions that it was because of race when race rather clearly had nothing to do with this. We have idiots calling the black cops racist against the black band director just to save face because I called them out on not watching the damn video.

And consumers "punish" Apple for these unrepairable devices by buying new iphones in record numbers.

Until consumers hurt Apple in the ONE place it cares - it's pocketbook - hope is lost on changing them.

But consumers are like lemmings. We see this in pre-orders for videogames and folks who proudly are buying the latest crop of obnoxiously priced videocards, or in the car industry where some consumers paying way over sticker just so they can have the latest new model.

And then we wonder why companies seem to have us bent over.

Did you actually watch the video to see that 1/2 the cops and people telling him to stop were also not white, or do you enjoy getting race-baited??

This is all good news and all, but we need to keep from setting the bar too damn low. I do not consider 100,000 miles to be a huge benchmark. I understand the constraints of a study of EV batteries since most EVs simply haven't been around long enough to study, but we as consumers should not be accepting EVs to be throw-away items like gadget-makers have turned most consumer electronics.

Yeah 90% charge remaining is still a decent number, but your 200 mile range when new turned into only 180 mile max range in less than a decade. And since you typically are told to only charge to 80%, your real world range is only 144 miles or so. In the winter that will be down to less than 100 miles.

People shouldn't be falling for misinformation about batteries (like the repeated dismissed myth that they are worse for the environment), but there is also a lot of overly positive info out there that doesn't reflect reality.

They'll be saying "Yup, our ancestors were barbarians. In the 1950s they would give lobotomies to people that were mentally ill. In the 2020s they would mutilate the sexual organs of those who were mentally ill. We do not look kindly onto those practices today now that we know better".

We owe that cellmate some congrats for doing what the justice system should have done. The fact that he wasn't executed in Texas of all states is both surprising and a damn shame.
