Never heard of Quiblr but I really like the look and feel of. Also great that you added a "For you page". Any chance you can add kbin/mbin instances? Is Quiblr like a frontend which pulls data from other instances or is it an other fediverse piece of software? And are we able to selfhost Quiblr?

Exactly. And that's where all the interest for our information comes from. Because it almost feels like you're writing to yourself and all recipients are anonymous, you spill a lot.

I was the same. I shared a lot of (personal) stuff. Now I try to be a bit more thoughtful about it. If people would find out who I am, would I be comfortable with the things I shared. And can the things I share be compiled to something that points towards me? And then I decide if I still want to post it.

Suspend and resume are indeed fantastic. There is no wait time before you can game.

Yeah, that last part about getting my gaming vibe going is something I recognize. I used to get a lot of joy out of gaming and could spend hours on it. Now it is feeling more and more like something I do just to pass time.

That was my move as well. I did do some upgrades on my PC along the way, but the base was still from 2009 (and I must say, it functioned surprisingly well). But a couple of months back I upgraded my PC as well. But the decline in play time on the Steam Deck was started before the upgrade.

I should probably use it more as you do. Plug it in on the TV and do some group gaming or just for myself, and keep it with me when traveling.

That sucks man. Nice to have the Steam Deck then. At least you have some form of entertainment.

It definitely is, and I really enjoyed it when I got it. But I do run into the limitations of the device. Those limitations are by design because I would like a bigger screen, but putting a 17" screen on a handheld doesn't make it a handheld anymore. So my usecase might not fit with the device anymore. I do use it sometimes to play sports or casual games. But that's about it.

I too miss reddit sometimes. Mostly because it had such a large userbase that there was always something interesting to find/read. If you had the right subreddits it was a very nice and friendly place. I like the fediverse (I'm on mbin) but there are still some hurdles to take. Such as finding nice magazines not on your home server. There are some lists and stuff, but I just want to search in the search bar of the site and find them. Also, there is still a 20 year gap of information. If you have a question it is most likely already asked at reddit. So searching on DuckDuckGo or Reddit will almost certainly give you an answer. Searching on the fediverse won't give you the same hitrate. Especially for more non-mainstream subjects. For instance: I have a specific kind of motorcycle, the magazine on the fediverse is dead. Not one post, no activity (so that's my fault as well). On reddit, there a couple of thousand threads. I just recently decided I wanted to interact more on the fediverse (hence this reply) to put in my effort to keep the fediverse alive, active and growing. I just need to find some subjects to start a relevant and interesting new thread.

I don't think lemmy/mbin/etc. will be as popular since it's too much trouble for the non-techies. I do think mastodon/misskey/etc. is quite active and interesting. It's better then twitter. And since I follow the right people I really like pixelfed instead of instagram. I think those are better, but it is an adjustment. Since you have to put in the work to find the right people to follow. And while I dislike the instagram algorithm, it did offer some very good, high quality photography. But I think it's going the facebook way. Facebook in it's early days was a great way to see what your friends and family where up to. Now it's just old memes, stupid jokes, fake news and advertisements. Instagram is becoming that as well.

On macOS you need to do that quite a couple of times. Changing settings, installing stuff to run in the background, install stuff to open open login, etc. So it is there. Furthermore a lot of programs and guides for linux are written to make it easy so they use sudo but you don't always have to run it as root. But not doing so usually requires more steps. So linux is more restricting but to circumvent that, people use sudo a bit too much.

Blocking outgoing traffic isn't needed. But was mere a headsup if that is something you've alread setup. What router do you have? Usually when you open a port there is a dropdown menu or checkboxes for what kind of connection the port opening is allowed.

If your forgejo host needs to connect to the outside world, you can open the port for incomming traffic only for related and established traffic. That way when somebody wants to connect to your port as a new connection it will fail. So when somebody has bad intentions, it will not work unless you've already connected to them in the first place. You need to permit outgoing traffic from forgejo if you block outgoing traffic.

Yes, I do. Sometimes I disagree with something but I know my opinion will not be appreciated and I will be called names for just a different opinion. Often, it's not that I out those opinions in public but I just think them to myself but let other people be as they are. But that nuance will not come across online.

You're right that they are miles ahead of other companies regarding communication and opt-out. And indeed it's rare that they will adhere to your choice when they implement new functions. For new users it's good to know that they perhaps want to switch this data collection off. Maybe it's a knee jerk reaction from my side: wanting to increase privacy and seeing this message brought up some worries. Especially because other companies started the same. Google also disguises stuff for better privacy or security, but in the end it's just to prevent users from blocking their data analytics.

Good to know it doesn't have all the functions. Feels more and more that they would like to make money out of it. Which is fine, but then I feel less inclined to help them serve the fediverse.

Ah, that's what my guess was. It couldn't be that people just gave up on hosting it.
