  • This has less to do with Swift and more to do with Fox's decades long strategy to keep misogynists angry with successful women and engaged with Fox news.

  • yes I've lost hours on that game

  • I've seen that with a very conservative former friend. They would send me reel after reel on Instagram of right wing talking heads discussing the "proof" they had that the coivd vaccine was deadly, "proof" that the human soul is placed in the egg at conception, and the LGBTQ+ people were really pedophiles.

There seemed to be no sense that a 30 second, highly edited reel on instagram could be false. It was telling them what they wanted to hear. The part that annoyed me was that they thought they were debating there position in good faith with these reels. That if they sent enough of them to me I would just say "Wow! you're right, that reel from Andrew Tate really opened my eyes!"

We don't talk any more and I hate that because we were really good friends until about 9 months ago.

  • If at some point we reached out and dug deep enough into study of existence only to find that some things simply happen or emerge without any cause whatsoever

I don't think that the human mind would allow that to be a conclusion. Like others have pointed out, some would ascribe the "thing" as happening from a supernatural origin, others would say we just haven't found the reason for it.

I don't think we have evolved to understand that something can happen without any cause.

  • I know a woman that is a trump supporter. She is also a christian evangelical and has been most of her life.

I think the reason she is a trump supporter is that her christian education has taught her that there is a hierarchy to reality.

That men are the protectors - God (a man in her world view) is the head of that

Women are the providers and submissive to men.

I think the bravado of trump appeals to her sense of reality, A strong "protector" man in charge. All of his limitations are not for her to question because she is the provider not the questioner.

  • Bragging about accomplishments and compromise is the old way to campaign.

The modern form of getting elected is not to actually do anything. Because if you solve a problem then you can't scare your voters with that problem in the future.

An example of this is abortion. Conservatives could always count on the one issue, "pro-life" voter to give them their vote to ban abortion. Now that it's become easier for states to restrict abortion there is less incentive for these one issue voters to come out to the polls.

I fear that the left is starting to see the effectiveness of the "scare the voter" strategy and will drag their feet on certain hot topic issues like abortion so they can get more votes.

  • It would really hurt the older home owners but if we also had a well funded social security safety net then maybe older home owning Americans wouldn't be so desperate to keep housing prices high.

You know use the tax money to help others that aren't billionaires

  • This is such a good visualization of big numbers and big bank accounts.

It's also a good way to really see the bull shit argument that it's unfair to tax the wealthy at a higher rate. Even if they get taxed at 90% (which I don't think will happen in my lifetime) they still will have enough money for them and their decedents to live a lavish lifestyle. And that extra money could really make America into the country that it pretends to be.

  • Who will they elect next? Trump is not the end point on that particular axis.

But Trump is really the glue that holds many of these people together. I don't follow conservative politics too closely but I don't see someone else that has his ability to hold the ultra-right together as he has done. Not saying there aren't a large pool of con artists that are fighting to take his place when he is gone. I think there are quite a few people that want that power and I think that is going to breed a shit show for the far right (lots of infighting).

Of course if he gets re-elected and has a favorable Congress then well established laws and political norms can and will be changed to allow for something of a monarchy which takes the above off the table. That is his family becomes the de-facto ruling family.

But if he doesn't get re-elected or has a Congress that will fight and make his tenure difficult, and when he dies I think the far-right is going to fracture with 3 or 4 new crazy people trying to take over what Trump has held together.

  • Sounds like the man is really bored with his life and all he has left are drugs to keep him entertained

  • Its crazy to me as to how many people will use a "comedian" as one of their sources for healthcare information.

I mean if I wanted advice on how to be a shitty comedian then I would ask Maher for advice because he is a pro at that. But I ain't taking his advice or even his opinion for my healthcare.

  • puts on tinfoil hat

EVs are starting to make a dent in the market place and oil producing countries don't like that so they lower oil prices to keep people driving ICE (Internal Combustion Engines) vehicles.

    takes off tinfoil hat

I'm sure it's more complicated than that

  • As others have said this purchase didn't really fuck up his overall lifestyle.

Yet when the topic of raising taxes on these people comes up they all freak out, like if they have to pay an extra 20% on their wealth they will be living on the streets.

  • I like to learn how to lucid dream

  • This is an argument that is used all the time in politics and business when a (partial) solution to a big problem is presented.

"Well there may be unintended consequences to this solution so we can't do anything until every single potential problem that may arise sometime in the future is completely worked through and solved."

I mean if you are going into space then that is probably the way to do things but trying to solve childhood hunger? Yea you got time to fix the problems as they arise.

  • It's a video of a guy that falls off the edge of the world. You can hear him saying "see I was right!" as he bounces off the shell of the turtle.

  • Yep. If you are not willing to make the changes to your habits around eating and exercise as well as work on your mental well being then you will not see the long term changes you are looking for.

I think for many people it's no so much that they want to regain the weight, it's just they don't know how to make the changes that they need to make to lose the weight and keep it off. And I think the biggest change that people need to make is looking at their mental health and how that is contributing to their long term weight gain.

  • When you start looking at older debunked theories that lasted for a long time you can see the human bias in them. Not just a human bias but a a western bias.

Two that stick out for me:

Trees compete for sunlight - I think it makes sense to us humans because we compete for resources but in truth trees are way more 'community' based

The male alpha wolf - It's how the western world has been organized for centuries so it's easy to see that in a wolf pack even though its not true.
