  • From the perspective of the photon, this all happens more or less instantaneously. Or so I have been told. I was also told that my tongue has 5 or 6 zones where different aspects of flavor are detected and I now know that to be wrong. So maybe fuck your ice cream.

  • What do you mean by tempting? Like are you asking about brand new games that don't qualify for "patient" or just games in general? I'm not what most would call a gamer (I'm just an old dude that plays games sometimes) so I don't know that a "Civ 7" gives me much context as to what's being asked.

  • Still playing through 2016 Doom. In my defense, this hasn't been a great year for carving out time for gaming. I realized a couple days ago that I hadn't even played anything in over a week (Dec 30th was the last day I'd played a game). Sad times being an adult with responsibilities.

Anyway, I'm hoping I finish the game soon. I don't know if it qualifies as "patient gaming", but I bought the Castlevania Dominus collection in 2024, which is the PC/Steam collection of DS Metroidvania Castlevania games. I played these games on the DS back in the day, still have them and my old DS, but I'm looking forward to playing them again. I mostly game on the Steam Deck these days and I think these games are a good fit for that hardware. They're all really fun games that I look back on fondly, so here's hoping I can get started on at least one of them in the next few weeks or so before my gaming season comes to an end.

  • I started playing one of these on the Wii many, many years ago. I think it was the original. It was a lot of fun. I don't think I beat it, nor was I heavily invested enough to remember names and strategies, but it was cool to play an RPG that I didn't get to play when it originally came out.

  • I don't have a ton of anecdotal evidence to know for sure. There was one time I was riding with a friend who got pulled over for speeding while I was with her. She was Asian. She managed to talk herself out of a ticket in a town that is a notorious speed trap. Prior to that, the only time I'd ever seen or heard of someone not getting a ticket after being pulled over was the time my boyfriend got pulled in a Walgreen's parking lot because he did not turn his lights on before he started moving the car out of a parking spot at night. So, the friend talking herself out of the speeding ticket was kind of impressive at the time. Granted, I'm not sure if her race contributed to it or not. She was a pretty woman and even if it's cliche, I'm pretty sure it makes things a little easier some times.

Me on the other hand, I'm not Asian. I've gotten tickets before for various things. But I digress.

  • I wonder if things have flipped back with the modern crop of teens and young adults, or perhaps my experience is an outlier.

My partner's kids and their friends mostly seem to LOVE cologne and perfume. They use it heavily and daily. I'm somewhat more sensitive to it than most and strong fragrances like that will literally take my breath away as well as make it harder for me to breathe, so it's a thing I notice. Similar experience when going places where the crowd is predominantly in the 16 - 24 age range, it can be a challenge for me.

The folks I know who are older than that range mostly seem to barely or rarely use cologne and perfume. I don't typically even smell fragrances much anymore when I'm out and about (like shopping). At most, it's usually scents that I associate with being from fabric softener on clothes, body washes, hair products, and deodorants.

I do think there's a good chance that your correlation with reduced tobacco smoking might be a thing, but then I smell weed almost as frequently as I used to smell cigarettes when I'm out and about, and I don't even live in a state where it's legal. So, I'd almost expect to smell more cologne and perfume while out and about as folks are trying to cover up the smell of weed.

  • This happened to me once in real life, sorta. I was several miles deep into a trail along the base of a mountain when a couple of loose dogs and I crossed paths. Of course there was no cellphone reception, so I was a bit at a loss as to what I should do. Neither one of them would actually come up close to me, but they were close enough that I could see they didn't have collars. I feel like there's a learning opportunity there, always keep your dogs on a leash when you're out in public.

Anyway, first I tried to follow them as best I could, thinking they might pull a Lassie and lead me to their owner or owners. Maybe it was someone in need of help, after all. After what felt like hours of walking, still no sign of the owners. At this point I was getting tired and running low on water, plus it was getting late and starting to sprinkle.

I decided to turn back. Figured I'd call the cops or something once I got back to my car and could get close enough into town for my phone to start working again. Go figure, the dogs followed me. That whole time I thought I was following them. Anyway, get to the stairs leading up to the parking lot, and this lady at the top belted out a screech that could have shattered adamantium. Apparently the dogs were "wild coyotes". Like I was supposed to know that somehow?

  • I haven't been to Burger King in years, but I have been feeling the call of the void the past few times I've been traveling and needed a place to stop and grab some food.

I stopped eating at "BK" for the better part of a decade after I got terribly sick from eating one of their "Rodeo Burgers". It was basically the low-end burger option, except they replaced the onion with onion rings and used ketchup-based barbecue for the sauce.

The onion rings must've been the previous day's unsold rejects or something. I remember having the worst heartburn I've ever experienced in my life and then feeling so terribly sick for the next 2 days.

I'm 99% sure I have had BK since then, but it was breakfast-only.

Back in the day, it was the only fast food option for onion rings where I was growing up. They sucked compared to the real thing, but despite that they had their appeal. Now my stomach turns just thinking about them.

  • In this thread: I'm mostly finding people I feel I need to add to my "no longer like them" list for irreconcilable differences.

I'm having a hard time deciding what qualifies as "HATED" or highly disliked.

A lot of people hated Edge of Tomorrow because Tom Cruise. But I am actually quite fond of the movie.

A lot of people hate Apocolypto, and it's objectively a terrible movie from a historical as well as moral/ethical perspective, I don't disagree there. But at the end of the day it is entertaining if you can turn your brain off.

  • Some people say that real men don't have feelings

We have feelings (we have feelings)

Some people say that we are not real men

    (We're real men)

    That hurts our feelings

(Hurts our feelings when you say we're not real men)

Some people say that real men are invincible

    (We're vincible) we're vincible

  • Sounds like Eternal might not be my thing, but who knows. One of the reasons I choose Doom over Eternal initially is because Doom lets me take my time and explore when I want to. Eternal seemed like it was go, go, go cortisol, cortisol, cortisol. And that was well above my limit.

  • I would love a super casual sonic-esque game that you could just mindless meander through without having to worry about falling into environmental hazards or bumping into enemies. Basically just complete and utter freedom to blast through a level without having to think too much about it and not having to fuss with a lot of different controls/buttons. Wonder if anything like that exists.
