  • I were unfortunate enough to get an assignment about sending messages to ServiceNow through a REST interface. The company had a team that managed ServiceNow, so I set up a meeting with one of the people there to get read access to the test environment so I could confirm that it worked. The person invited, then invited a coworker who in turn invited the manager of their department. During the meeting we got established how little they wanted my team to do anything that could affect the system due to how easy it was to make mistakes that took weeks or months to fix, how complicated it was and how many years it took to be proficient in. The whole thing was basically a lecture on how unequiped our team was to manage their system and how they didn’t want us to break it with changes we weren’t planning on making anyway. It took a few meetings after that to get credentials and when I got them I got admin access for some reason. That experience left me wondering why ServiceNow was even being used as it sounded like a liability more than anything else.

  • Sounds great for the kid that just lost their mother and now has an absent father escaping through work. Definitely a healthy way to process emotions that won’t risk lasting damage. /s

  • An example from work a few weeks ago. I fixed some vibe coded UI code that had made it to prod. The layout of the UI was basically just meant to be an easy overview of information relevant to an item. The LLM had done everything right except it assumed a weird mix of tailwind and bootstrap, mixing and matching css classes from both. After I implemented the classes myself it went from a single column view to grids and nested grids grouping the data intuitively. I talked with the dev who implemented it, and basically it was just something quickly cobbled together with AI until it was passable. The AI had added a lot of extra that served no function and that didn’t conform to a single css framework, but looked like it could. For months noone questioned it despite talk about that part of the UI needing a facelift.

I don’t know how representative it is, but about half the time I’m thoroughly confused about a piece of code and why it was written the way it was, the answer has turned out to be AI. And unlike when a developer wrote it, there rarely is any reason to have written it the weird way.

  • The US as a political entity is controlled by the current administration, and that’s really the only thing that matters to the rest of the world in regards to the US as a country. I feel for the people in the US who fought against this happening, but in terms of geopolitics the dissatisfaction of the populace only matters in so far as it changes the actions of your government.

  • I switched to lemmy about two years ago and went almost cold turkey. There was one community on reddit that I returned to a couple of times in the first few weeks, but even that stopped as it just wasn’t worth it. I have been to reddit a few times since, but only when trying to solve a problem and reddit comes up as a search result, and only after trying other sources first.

  • Greta is one of four activists that have been sent home. According to Israel only those four signed the papers neededfor it and the rest are expected to be sent home after a court have ruled they can. Basically the remaining 8 activists reportedly chose not to give Israel the easy way of getting rid of them. I don’t have any English news sources though, as I read it in a newspaper in my native language.

  • Really? That’s really surprising to me. I’m from Denmark where we use 24h time a lot so I’m used to it, but except for edge cases it’s easy to switch between them. Using Fahrenheit however is a struggle. I have to convert it every time, I have no idea about the temperature until I see it in celsius really. I guess it comes down to me having been exposed to both clock formats but only really on temperature unit.

  • I feel like it’s fair to say that if you want god’s forgiveness you must accept mans judgement in cases of abuse. If their god’s salvation is worth less than however many years of prison they’d get, then that’s their choice. I don’t want them to be able to shrug off the guilt and continue the abuse with peace of mind just so they may also escape the punishment they think would otherwise await them after death.

  • That may be true but for those literally being threatened with war it would be stupid not to act on the threats anyway. And your speculation that it’s a smoke screen sounds really dismissive the countries that now have to accept that the US might be or become the greatest security threat in decades.

  • I dual booted my study pc. Well technically I did. I didn’t use windows for a few months without thinking about it and by then I was too afraid of windows corrupting my linux if I ever booted it. So I effectively just had a Linux machine with half half the disk space. Never had a problem with it though.

  • The first one’s probably won’t be. But I don’t think it’s too far off. I expect the first ones to be some random non white people who commited some indefensible crimes, or at least are accused of doing so. I wouldn’t be surprised if they go for people with terrorism charges so the next batch can be accused of terrorism as well to make the leap seem smaller. That they now define vandalism against tesla as terrorism will just help murky the waters to make the life sentence without judge or jury seem more palatable than it is every step of the way.

  • That’s the thing with calling the imprisonment in a foreign country “deportation”. It really muddies the water and makes it very easy for people to have an image of people being sent home, when in fact they send them to life in prison, so bad even the US doesn’t allow it yet. I hope they mean the former but fear the latter is more likely.

  • You fooled me into thinking this post was just a hidden 4974 reference. Really cool write up, I didn’t question it being an actually existing article until reading the replies.

  • Unfortunately, with all the capitulations that happened, I find it more likely that other firms will preemptively try to get in his good graces or at least keep a low profile if they haven’t already represented an enemy of Trump.

  • As far as I remember it was a two part protection. Any official act, no matter the intent, is protected. So as one dissenting justice pointed out, ordering seal team six to assassinate a political rival could be protected as it falls within the powers of the president to direct the military. Besides that, any criminal action outside of that overly broad protection still cannot be prosecuted using any evidence that comes from the actions of the president in their capacity as such. So if the president has a phone call logged in official records in which they outline or perform an illegal act, those logs will be inadmissible in court, only evidence reltaed to the president as a private individual is admissible. The stormy daniels case had to throw out evidence because of this, despite being related to crimes committed before the election even.

Obligatory disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer and working off of memory. I might misunderstand or misremember some of this.
