  • I can't get past how weirdly horny Niven was... had to stop reading the second ringworld. That being said Asimov gets weirdly horny in the later foundation novels too. Both of them really liked writing in way older men dating way younger women that just comes off as creepy now.

  • A good way to find stuff is to follow hashtags you are interested in. You start seeing people who post stuff you like and follow them as well. Want art? Follow #mastoart. Want stuff about programming? Follow #programming. Then you start seeing artists and programmers and you can follow them to see their other posts. They boost something and oh that is interesting to so you follow that person too. You kinda gotta get the ball rolling by just following stuff.

    There is not really an algorithm on masto which is simultaneously its greatest weakness and strength, just people boosting stuff, just people tagging stuff. It takes a little more work to find stuff but the benefit is no one can game the algorithm. Things spread organically.

  • Literally they say in the books that the ring has no effect on Tom, it's not simping its just cannon. He would have forgotten about it and lost it because it has no hold on him and can not influence his will. It literally could not corrupt him. Every one is influenced by it to some degree just being around it, the awe and fear of the power it hold. Tom can not even think of the ring like that it's just a little trinket to him. He isn't some super strong being or anything, he just doesn't have the ability to want things like that.

  • I am extremely skeptical of the claim that these companies have not been profitable. Fuck they said LOTR trilogy lost money and they were some of the biggest movies of all time. I don't think these companies are above cooking the books to make it look like they are losing money on paper.

  • Companies can no longer continue to grow through innovating their products or services. Companies are no longer competing in that domain because they have already conquered it completely.

    Companies can no longer grow through marketing and branding. Branding is everything and everywhere now, even normal people have personal brands, they have already conquered that domain and most people have grown to disdain marketing and branding so its less effective than ever.

    Companies can no longer grow through data collection and advertising. All data is collected, ads are everywhere and they are always listening to everything we say and do. They have already conquered that domain.

    Now all that's left is competition through exploitation. It's the only way companies can continue to grow. That is the stage of capitalism we are entering.

  • The best thing these unrecognized christians "doing God’s work" you say exist could be doing to help the world right now is to be actively and vocally trying to oppose the Christians that are currently very loudly advocating for fascism. There is literally no bigger threat right now. There is a clear imbalance in voices in the Christian community. The good Christians could be just as loud if they wanted, they could be setting an example, but they aren't. People always say it's just a "few" loud voices when talking about the bad things being said, if it only takes a few to be that loud then why the fuck are the good ones silent?
