  • The part you're calling "a hell of a stretch" is actually the reason LLMs work. It's not a good text parser. It's a great pattern matcher. And it matches patterns that aren't obvious or intuitive.

Many of the listed uses are actually great for this type of tech.

In theory, because of the amount of data used, there should be matched patterns that would allow it to be used for psychological research. Replicating well known studies in that area with the tech is a good way to test that theory.

Using it as a first-line simulation might not be a bad idea as long as its followed up with a real study to validate the results.

We just need to make sure that humans are checking the work properly because, as you say, it's not sentient, nor is it really capable of following a code, like the scientific method.

The real thing to fear is humans not doing their part out of greed, laziness, or malice.

  • It feels like an issue that should be solved with additional features. Understandably it's a low priority issue, but the current setup is going to produce this type of issue, and it's not really something that we can blame on anyone.

  • If anyone from feddit.it sees this, please set your language defaults to (presumably) Italian!

I just put them in my block list but I'd rather that be for much more extreme problems.

And to OP it's most likely because of this issue. Blocking isn't the right solution. Downvoting at least conveys that SOMETHING is wrong on their end. So people probably use it as such.

  • I've had 14.

10 of them were from when I was a kid through college, and then 4 in my professional career. I'm entering my 40s and have been at my current job for 8+ years now.

  • I kind of wish there weren't so many extreme leftists on Lemmy. It's not even that I'm far away from them, politically speaking, but there's no way you can bring up Capitalism and not have angry people commenting AT you and downvotes galore.

I'm not even pro-captialism, I'm just not nearly as anti as they are and it is still nothing but hostility.

  • When I was 16 I looked a bit older, so people would often assume I was over 18.

I was in Boston one day wandering around and I was approached by someone who wanted to give me a free personality test or something. He was handsome and I was a young gay boy so I figured why not?

It ended up being a scientology recruitment. They freaked and stopped trying to hard sell me their book when I told them I was 16. And their recruitment video had me laughing like crazy as I walked out.

I didn't know how crazy of a cult they are at the time. But it was a funny experience.

  • I went to a restaurant in Mexico City that served ant larvae sautéed in butter.

It tasted like butter and didn't have a very noteworthy consistency. It was an acceptable food that I'm glad I tried but would probably not go out of my way to buy again.

  • Video game jobs, when I was in the industry at least, draw in young idealistic game developers, pay them less than other tech counterparts, burn them out as fast as possible and then lay them off.

It is definitely hard to enjoy that and come out the other side still as excited about games.

  • This is very good from an admin or moderators perspective.

It makes it harder for new people to get into the fediverse, though. I'd love a version of this that helps new users find the right community.

It would be interesting if something like this federated out to other communities. I'd provide info about me as I feel comfortable, and what I want out of an instance of that federated service. Any community that signed up for it would get a notice of my interest and they could ask for more info or accept or deny me. Instead of the one response I could have many options at the end of it.

It would help me find smaller more closed instances without having to know about them, but still leave the control over whether they want to get to know me in their admin's hands.

  • I used to install custom ROMs on my android phone and spent days of my life getting everything exactly the way I wanted things.

I ended up with a clunkier version of iOS.

Ultimately I don't need or want an open platform in my pocket. I want to be able to trust that the App Store isn't garbage, and don't want to have to worry about my parents easily installing viruses on their devices.
