  • I've got the same hw in mine. Although I did buy and install ram to max it out. It's not the most powerful machine out there, but it's plenty enough for us.

  • This of course presumes that you have a Synology disk station. They come in a variety of different models.

I'm surprised at how much I'm able to serve from my device. I use it for cloud storage, file thinking across devices, photo management and backup across devices, ebook management, running a game server for my family, running an evernote-like service, etc etc.

It's been really good to have full control over all my information and not have to pay ever increasing fees to various companies for various services.

  • Yep. Exactly that. Didn't even realize the instance when I clicked, a habit I need to form. Although it would be really helpful if Lemmy reported exactly that. Something like "the content you are trying to view is on a federated instance."

  • Funny. Neither worked for me. Second link brought up this:

Top right three dot menu "About Community" brought up this, which is fine:

  • I just posted and article into connect and it did have some weird NL CR behavior in a couple spots.

    HOW TO SURVIVE THE HEATWAVE:

    1. Stay hydrated.
    2. Have an ice cream cone.
    3. Dismantle the fossil fuel industry which is literally burning the planet for the short term profit of a vanishingly small capitalist class.
    4. Wear loose clothing.

Judge clarifies: Yes, Trump was found to have raped E. Jean Carroll

    Aaron Blake 4 - 5 minutes

After Donald Trump was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll, his legal team and his defenders lodged a frequent talking point.

Despite Carroll’s claims that Trump had raped her, they noted, the jury stopped short of saying he committed that particular offense. Instead, jurors opted for a second option: sexual abuse.

β€œThis was a rape claim, this was a rape case all along, and the jury rejected that β€” made other findings,” his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said outside the courthouse.

A judge has now clarified that this is basically a legal distinction without a real-world difference. He says that what the jury found Trump did was in fact rape, as commonly understood.

The filing from Judge Lewis A. Kaplan came as Trump’s attorneys have sought a new trial and have argued that the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump in the civil suit was excessive. The reason, they argue, is that sexual abuse could be as limited as the β€œgroping” of a victim’s breasts.

Kaplan roundly rejected Trump’s motion Tuesday, calling that argument β€œentirely unpersuasive.”

β€œThe finding that Ms. Carroll failed to prove that she was β€˜raped’ within the meaning of the New York Penal Law does not mean that she failed to prove that Mr. Trump β€˜raped’ her as many people commonly understand the word β€˜rape,’ ” Kaplan wrote.

He added: β€œIndeed, as the evidence at trial recounted below makes clear, the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.”

Kaplan said New York’s legal definition of β€œrape” is β€œfar narrower” than the word is understood in β€œcommon modern parlance.”

The former requires forcible, unconsented-to penetration with one’s penis. But he said that the conduct the jury effectively found Trump liable for β€” forced digital penetration β€” meets a more common definition of rape. He cited definitions offered by the American Psychological Association and the Justice Department, which in 2012 expanded its definition of rape to include penetration β€œwith any body part or object.”

Kaplan also flatly rejected the Trump team’s suggestion that the conduct Trump was found liable for might have been as limited as groping of the breasts.

The reason? Trump was not accused of that, so the only alleged offense that would have qualified as β€œsexual abuse” was forced digital penetration. Beyond that, Trump was accused of putting his mouth on Carroll’s mouth and pulling down her tights, which Kaplan noted were not treated as alleged sexual abuse at trial.

β€œThe jury’s finding of sexual abuse therefore necessarily implies that it found that Mr. Trump forcibly penetrated her vagina,” Kaplan wrote, calling it the β€œonly remaining conclusion.”

Kaplan also noted that the verdict form did not ask the jury to decide exactly what conduct Trump had committed, and that neither prosecutors nor Trump’s lawyers had requested it to do so.

β€œMr. Trump’s attempt to minimize the sexual abuse finding as perhaps resting on nothing more than groping of Ms. Carroll’s breasts through her clothing is frivolous,” Kaplan wrote.

He added that the jury clearly found that Trump had β€œ β€˜raped’ her in the sense of that term broader than the New York Penal Law definition.”

The motion was a part of Trump’s efforts to appeal the verdict against him. That’s an effort that will apparently continue as he faces a separate defamation lawsuit from Carroll, dealing with claims Trump made about her allegations while he was still president.

But for now, Trump’s effort to push back has led to a rather remarkable clarification that severely undercuts his main talking point.

  • If you wish. You can set it up to only sync locally (intranet only) or you may expose it via DNS and port forwarding.

  • Yes! This! I'm not familiar with DFWP, but next time I'm on my PC, I'm adding it.

  • Basically anything I copy won't paste into the app. The exception is when I copy a link from an app like YouTube and paste it directly into Connect. But if I paste the same link into a notes app and copy the url from there, nothing happens when I try to paste in Connect.

    I'm on a Galaxy S9, Android version 10.

Just copied your message from the post menu and posted in the text box.

When I have paste issues, is almost always the keyboard app. Just a thought.

  • I'm using Synology photos. Auto backup for everyone's phones. Shared common library we move things into for all our photos. I miss some of the ai search capability of Google, but never enough to do anything but self host.

  • Never seen the channel. Of course, after looking it up, the first video I saw was a paiute deadfall trap. I saw often on the show Alone. Not a lot of calories and those little guys, but when you're hungry you take all you can get.

  • Hmm. This might be worth trying. And moving them to mow could work. Thank you!

Assuming they are effective, my only concern then is how they might affect other creatures. I understand that it radiates into the ground, but I'm also worried about things above ground. I'm particularly concerned about birds if it can affect them at all. I wouldn't want to deter them.

  • I haven't had luck with the current trap I've been using on active tunnels, moving, hoping, moving, crossing fingers, moving, etc. This suggested trap is a completely different style. Definitely going to look at it after work. Thanks!

  • Any issues/successes with mole tunneling around the yard? That's my biggest bane.

  • The sequel novella is just as short, but I was fortunate to be able to read them back to back. I enjoyed them so much and found them so refreshing in so many ways.

I don't remember The Priory having the same pacing issues as it's prequel, so I hope you really really enjoy it. And to be clear, I liked the prequel a lot too.

  • What is happening?! πŸ€ͺ We can blame Connect for Lemmy in moving this to the top level... blame alyaza which is more fun.

    points accusingly

  • Ack! Connect for Lemmy bugged out and my response died with it...

    sighs maybe later...

    Btw, meltdown does look interesting.

  • Yeah. I just finished a book that I really enjoyed called A Day Of Fallen Night which is a pretty cool to The Priory Of The Orange Tree if you've heard of it. It really was a great read, but the pacing and chosen method for organizing the various character viewpoints made my skin crawl more than once. It was frustrating, but one of those books that I really wanted to read regardless.

There is once a book that I read through, because once I'm committed I find it very hard to stop reading, but it was by far the most horrendous experience ever because the author didn't use quotes for the entire book and I had a real hard time following the dialogue.

Just finished also a couple of novellas which were a really nice and different from the more intense (e.g. action heavy) books I tend to read. They were the first books I've read where the protagonist is non-binary and referred to as they. It was challenging in some ways but also very good for me as well. A Psalm For The Wild-built and it's sequel A Prayer for the Crown-Shy.

Writing styles can certainly make a break books.

    That Meltdown book looks interesting!

  • currently reading a number of books after completely crashing out of doing that for the entire month of June. i think i can get about 3 in before the end of the month
