  • I suppose it depends on why they're being quiet. If other civilizations view each other as competitors for rare resources like worlds that would be inhabitable with out large scale terraforming, then being loud may get your planet targeted. That's the basis for the "Dark Forest" theory. I think that theory is interesting, but it's a bit pessimistic in my opinion. What's way more likely is, if there are other civilizations out there, the odds of them existing during the same time frame that we're here, AND being close enough to receive radio waves in a timely fashion, AND are at a technology level to send and receive those radio waves.... it's all very very very unlikely.

For me, what's way scarier is, it isn't that everyone is being quiet, it's that there isn't any one else out there, and we're one of the first civilizations to develop. If there were other highly advanced civilizations out there, there'd be signs of them, signs of their technology. Shit, I read that large ships moving at close to the speed light would generate detectable gravity waves. But so far, nothing.

  • It sure would be nice to be able to vote for candidates based on their ideas and positions, but that isn't the world we live in any more. Instead it'll probably be Biden or Trump, and that isn't any decision at all. Trump isn't fit to be president, he's a narcissistic liar, and only cares about himself. I very much don't support what Israel did in response, so many innocent people have died and it's absolutely awful. But do you think Trump would have been pro Palestine? Not supported Israel?

Polls are notoriously inaccurate, and anyone banging the drum of "POLLS SHOW BIDEN IS GOING TO LOSE" is trying to push that idea in the hopes less people get out to vote for that candidate. The type of wording Trump has been using is insanely inflammatory and will cost lives, this man has no further business in any elected office. Below is something Trump said on Veteran's Day:

"In honor of our great veterans on Veteran's Day, we pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists, and radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country. Lie, steal, and cheat on elections, and will do anything possible, whether legally or illegally, to destroy America, and the American dream," he wrote.

"The threat from outside forces is far less sinister, dangerous, and grave, than the threat from within. Despite the hatred and anger of the radical left lunatics who want to destroy our country, we will make America great again!"

  • I recently watched Better Call Saul, I very much enjoyed it! It was fantastic, engrossing, but I don't think it's QUITE as good as the full arc of Breaking Bad, thus my omission from my short list. I would highly recommend Better Call Saul though, it's absolutely wonderful!

  • When I was little, my mom dropped me and her friends kid off at a church for arts and crafts, I was 5. We we given toilet paper rolls, pipe cleaner, glue, and some other stuff to make butterflies. I studiously started making mine, I got the wings, the antenna and asked what I was supposed to use for the legs. A full grown ass women look me right in the eye and said "Butterflies don't have legs".

I had seen butterflies land on flowers and latch on with legs, I was so confused how an adult wouldn't know that.

  • You're not wrong, even the way the YouTube algorithm works pushes video creators to follow certain things to ensure they're videos get suggested by the algorithm. Shit like, someone's video is about making some crazy RC helicopter, I'd like to watch the video in chronological order, with discussion, planning, the build, then see the helicopter. But nearly every single YouTube video like this starts with 5-10 second clip of the end product, kinda removes the build up.

So years of that bullshit has forced video makers to do insanely fast jump cuts during dialog, because we can't have a normal human amount of pauses in speech, and all these other trends which have objectively made videos worse. On top of that, the inclusion of "video sponsors" so we can baked in advertising, and sometimes to the tune of quite a few minutes long. Algorithms seem like they make a lot of difference services objectively worse under the guise of improving the users experience.

  • Yeah, that's not great. It also puts all responsibility of content on the user, so if you post something offensive, they're not going to be the ones blamed. But if you post some art that they can make money off of, they definitely want that. We live in a gross world.

Below is that policy about data

    1. Data and Data Ownership

Data (sketches and associated metadata) on Sketch Toy is not permanent and may be deleted at any time to clear up space. Sketch Toy will do its best to delete only old data that is no longer used. By submitting Content to Sketch Toy for inclusion on the web site, you grant Sketch Toy a world-wide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, modify, adapt, publish and advertise the Content without prior notice.

  • Hmm does this Pa-per record my usage, or harvest data from the room I use it in? What about the EULA for Pa-per, you know, in case I want to understand all the ways I'm being taken advantage of, but listed in the hardest to consume way possible?

  • I very much agree, having a clear arch in mind helps, which is how Breaking Bad felt mostly. A show that comes to mind which did exactly what you said was Supernatural. There was a logical conclusion arch wise in season 4 or 5 but it was popular so they were pressured to keep it going, and now.. meh.

  • You know how some shows start strong, but then loose their magic a few seasons in? Or shows like Game of Thrones that shit the bed so hard with their ending, but it retroactively removes the enjoyment from prior seasons? Silicon Valley is part of a short list of shows that just were great start to finish. Interesting, engaging, well written, and a solid ending. My list is short:

The Good Place Breaking Bad Silicon Valley
