  • Step 1: Put out outrageous conspiracy theories or policies on twitter
Step 2: Wait for crazies to comment and create a high engagement shitstorm
Step 3: Now you can reference those outrageous things on mainstream media
    ...
    Step 4: Profit
    Step 5: Armageddon

  • We know that with food and certain areas becoming precarious due to climate change, wars and genocides are kind of inevitable. Syria was partially caused by an extremely rare drought causing people to move into the cities. You could argue that Ukraine was caused by Russia and the EU trying to lay their hands on the Ukrainian breadbasket. So it's possible that this is the beginning of the "climate wars". While that is speculation and it's certainly not framed that way, it certainly does reinforce the sides for the future. Putin / Russia knows it too and they have a many borders with countries that will be in turmoil due to climate change.

  • “throw everything away and start again” really aligns well

Haha no. But you would have free reign to create something new and experiment with and then demonstrate - without having to content with certain forces. It can't be the only solution, but it could be a way to demonstrate to people a 5 min village. Like $20.000 for a sustainable luxury apartment with an amazing view (probably way too optimistic). That might lead to more people wanting change in housing policies and real estate ownership.

  • A while back I thought about creating a kind of planned community. Get land somewhere, or "take over" an existing village / county somewhere and change the local ordinances / zoning. So people would buy in and invest money or resources or just time and labour (crowdfunding). Then build it from scratch.

Have enough agricultural land, have your own water collection, power generation for the village and transportation to the nearest city. Basically becoming a kind of real estate developer. Or something like a kibbutz.

This seems the only realistic option because cities have such incredibly forces / money interests at work.

  • Cheers, didn't know that something like a usable "open images dataset" existed. Awesome.

The last bit isn't really relevant for your app, just a general rant really. It's just that I'd like better image viewing support all around. Like in browsers there is an image and you can click on it but then a new tab opens. I have imagus but it's not ideal and restricts the image to the smaller browser window. In the explorer I have quicklook now that opens images with space but the zoom feature is half assed too. Then many images apps have long startup times (>0.2 secs) or are bloaty. It's just a bit annoying that it's 2024 and PCs still can't handle images really well.

  • Good question. Maybe it's easier to rebuild industry even if partially destroyed. But I think it's mostly about natural resources (search).

I think the original plan was to get all of Ukraine into the duty free zone of the EU which would have made trade mostly exclusive with EU instead of exclusive with Russia.

  • Sorry if these are stupid questions.

Does this only show these foss_photo_libraries and your local photos?

    Does it support jpegXL?

I'd love a seamless zoom feature for images in the browser. I use imagus but I'd love if the popup window could zoom to be bigger than the browser window.

  • drugs should be devriminalized and un-gatekept. ... over-the-counter section in your local grocery store

"Hello. A sack of potatoes and a kilo of meth please!"

"Here you go. A healthy breakfast!"

"Nah I just like peeling potatoes when I'm on meth"

PS: BTW banks in Europe are kind of regulated to be "social banks" for customers, you have a right to a bank account and free cards and you can take out your electronically wired money for free from the machine. That's what a bank should be imho.

PPS: Good assumptions, it's really important that they work as public utility and optimized for social benefit than profit.

  • Sure, I don't give a shit about Swift or her music either. My problem is the overly (hypocritical) focus on her, the strong language ("hate her"), the reason why this critique works so well (misogyny) and that it distract from climate action, and that it's propaganda started on fox news.

This is an example of why we won't do shit about climate change. We'll burn every last bit of fossil fuel and do nothing about adaptation and then have a bunch of wars and genocides. These are the mechanisms why. That's what's pissing me off.

  • She needs to pollute so she can keep singing isn’t the defense you think it is.

No, concert goers are doing the polluting. If Swift retires then you'd get other superstars using Jets instead.

It's a systemic problem, so the strategy is to distract from the immensity of change needed. We're not even remotely talking about what would need to be done. Basically focusing on taylor swift isn't much different from greenwashing or outright climate change denial. Criticizing swift helps PREVENTS action on climate change.

  • Not sure if crimes against humanity can be brought before the ICJ since this can't really be construed as a genocide. But I'm sure this is going to get amplified by the US media soon and will harm China geopolitically.

I'd want their coastguard to arrest the fisherman and charge them with terrorism using chemical warfare. But that might be a bad idea lol.

  • IMHO that critique is fundamentally flawed. She's selling a service (concerts) and for that she needs to fly. So all that CO2 is caused by the concert goers. Without the concert goers she wouldn't need a jet. Of course, then it's also a negligible amount. And presumably she isn't flying to jets like side by side, but only uses(used) one at a time.

About the other suggestion in that article, I do not want billionaires to use their money for political purposes. This is responsibility of the voters and the government. Ideally billionaires shouldn't exist but at the very least they should not control our politics with money.

But the real fundamental flaw is that this is a distraction. We need sweeping systematic change and focusing on individuals works against discussing that. Where is the manhattan project to R&D our industrial processes and services to not require carbon? Instead we get this kind of propaganda and "let the free market solve it". Well what Swift does is the best the market offers. Well maybe she could switch to a Celera 500L. But maybe the concert goers should just go to concerts of local artists instead, or superstars that fly low energy jets. Lol.

I honestly have to give props to FOX news. Or the think tank that came up with this strategy to focus on Swift.

  • They are not wrong, Russia is practically at war with the entire west. They are support Ukraine and pour weapons in there like no tomorrow.

If Russia can keep this up and "outlast" and then conquer East-Ukraine they get the valuable part of the country, the breadbasket and industry. And I doubt think the military will stop supporting Putin during this war.

It also weakens democracy Europe because of refugees, massive spending and increase of austerity. This is part of their geopolitcal strategy, the more fascism in Europe, the less unified the EU is.

And for US / NATO it creates an more streamlined front even with just West-Ukraine. Even if individual countries in the EU become more nationalist and leave the EU, they won't leave NATO with Russia looming. You can also read appreciation for a more militaristic and hawkish attitudes in European countries.

So for the future wars to come with climate change this is an acceptable outcome for those in power. Only the people in Ukraine, Russia and the taxpayers loose.
