  • Mac has its problems too. Apparently there was an issue with upgrading to macOS Sonoma or booting Asahi Linux on certain MacBooks if ProMotion was disabled or something like that, which essentially "bricked" the laptop.

All operating systems have their odd bugs and snags.

  • Both AMD and Intel bake a hardware TPM into their CPUs IIRC. I think Windows 11 complains more about Secure Boot not being enabled on my PC than the TPM.

  • I probably wouldn't call it cancer, seems quite loaded, but gaming on Linux still has its snags even if performance on it its better. Like you and OP said, hardware is a big issue, but also some gaming-oriented creature comforts like a proper platform for recording/screenshotting. Steam has screenshotting but not recording AFAIK, Yes, OBS exists, but let's be real - it's clunky to set up because it's not meant to be a game recorder, it's meant to be broadcasting software. On Windows, it will detect a running game automatically and let you record. Someone did send me another piece of software that's simpler, but it doesn't support Wayland. The transition from X11 to Wayland is affecting a lot of software like this, and Windows just doesn't have this issue.

  • To be honest, I'd rather they focus on making the experience similar if not the same across the different platforms. Android still has glaring bugs that the others don't have (followed playlists still don't get placed in folders), Windows still has missing features (no half star ratings).

  • UK gov site is pretty good, NHS can be an absolute mess, especially going into the different trusts.

  • I personally really like the way macOS handles multiple desktops and full-screen apps. Would love to recreate it in KDE.

  • No prob! These digital voices have been around for over a decade now, maybe more. Some of them use "AI" to improve the sound of the voice (i.e. support more languages than actually recorded, make it sound realistic) but not in the way that current AI voice trends are going.

  • “It’s pretty scary, but it’s scary in the sense of how stupid music already is anyway, so it’s not that frightening. Like, ‘This thing can make a pop song!’ Have you heard a pop song? Great. Let it go. Unleash the beast, you know – holy shit would that ever open up the niche market for actual musicianship.”

  • Not so much an expert rather than just parroting what I saw, but according to a cursory search, and a Twitter community note I saw from a friend, the voice used by this project is Synthesizer V, which is actually a perfectly legitimate piece of software for using digital voices in music production. If you've heard of Vocaloid, or know about Hatsune Miku, SynthV is basically a competitor in that space.

Going back to the community note, the voice used is actually called Natalie, and apparently the TOS of SynthV does not allow use of its voices using a name that's different to what was given. So they essentially can't present the Natalie voice as Anna, which they are.

EDIT: I want to clarify that these voice synthesisers like SynthV and Vocaloid are usually based on the recording of someone who has consented to the use of their voice in that regard and has been paid for it. It's not like the current AI voice cloning trend going on.

  • Yeah, sim racing is very much left out in the Linux world, if not pretty janky. Virtual reality isn't doing too hot here either, Valve just announced Steam Link for the Oculus headsets, and right now it's Windows only.

  • Pretty much. If you want the simplest, "just works" Linux setup, your best bet right now is buying a Steam Deck.

  • For me it has been that simple, but to get to that simplicity took a lot of work. I've tried Windows 11 and it just sucked for gaming. Stuttered like mad on Cyberpunk and Bluetooth had major latency problems, and neither occurred on Linux.

  • To be honest, even if they undo that, the damage is done. Trust is lost. And to be honest, after hearing what Spez said about the vulnerable people who post on his site, I wouldn't want to touch the site even if I liked the official app.

  • Same, I remember r/worldnews not swinging that way whatsoever.

  • Used it before but not for rolling recordings. I heard it can be janky with hotkeys on Wayland, but I'll have to give it a shot.

  • Yeah. I read an article (also on Ars Technica funnily enough) about how some moderators aren't equipped to deal with things. I believe they singled out r/canning because of the potential for food poisoning, but r/ender3 had a sympathetic "mod" who only joined that subreddit as a moderator just to fuck with Reddit corporate when they were replacing the mods.

Reddit, predictably, did not respond, so whoever wrote that article did their job right.

  • I have to use all three what does that make me

  • Same here. Linux just need rolling gameplay recording and better controller support (steering wheels for one) and for me it'd be set. I know Decky has it for the Steam Deck but I haven't seen one for desktop that works fine on Wayland.
