  • It's all in whether management lets the engineers make a good product or pushes for cost reduction above all else. American made Toyotas are just fine.

A similar thing is true with Chinese made goods. Companies that care enough to implement proper process and quality controls can have perfectly adequate quality come out of Chinese factories. It's just that the companies that were quickest to export production cared more about minimizing every last cost than about quality.

  • Heating them together is usually fine in my experience, but storing them separately is a must. The pasta robs moisture form everything else, getting mushy and leaving the sauce dry.

If you really want one container to bring leftovers to work, put the sauce on the bottom add a layer of cheese, then put the pasta on top. Don't mix everything until it is warm. You can get surprisingly ok results this way.

  • They've got translucent strips so you can see the fluid level. I would estimate they have about 4 gallons in each, but slosh adds a lot of uncertainty.

People from all over bought up cans to fill with gas and send to western NC. The heavily effected areas were entirely impassable to large fuel trucks and can't run gas pumps without power anyway. New cans work just as well as old cans so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

  • nhc.noaa.gov is the best for quick, up to date official info about expected impacts. Also local county and municipality pages are important to check for evacuation orders and routes.

For anyone who wants technical deep dives into the meteorology of tropical storms, I can't recommend www.tropicaltidbits.com enough.

  • The models do have it going down to "only" cat 3 at landfall thanks to some aggressive wind shear closer to florida. The wind shear will spread out the high winds a bit, decreasing the max wind speed, but exposing a wider area to hurricane strength winds.

I really hope Tampa is ready for this level of storm surge and winds.

  • The shape they chose for the frame is a Möbius strip, which has the primary defining characteristic of having only one side and one edge. If you pick a row of keys to follow, after one loop around, you'll be on the underside of the frame. Continue to go around another full turn and you'll be right where you started. So both sides are actually just 1 side that loops around with a half turn of twist. A similar math curiosity would be the klein bottle, which has a single surface.

  • The whole point of captchas is to train bots. Did you think they were all road object and optical character recognition based because those are the categories humans really excel at?

  • From a product development viewpoint, the gun is an uninteresting part. It's better to use something that already has a mature production line and has been thoroughly field tested. It's the vision and control systems they are interested in developing, the gun is just the chosen end effector for this application.

Even when they're ready to start deploying systems like this, there's a lot of value in using compenents that the military already has a lot of spare parts for and that personnel know how to maintain. I wouldn't expect a custom gun until units like this are commonplace.

  • Won't someone think of the tech companies in these unprecedented times.

The focus should be on the widespread devastation to peoples lives. Who cares if the semiconductor industry has to deal with worse yields and higher prices? That's not what matters right now.
