  • So do you react the same way to sci fi or fantasy movies? I mean nobody uses magic or flies faster than light in real life. I've always been puzzled by this point of view because I don't get why this is where the line is drawn.

  • We stick with it at this point because it's not worth the hassle of changing it, and while points related to our axial tilt or the eccentricity of our orbit are less arbitrary it ultimately doesn't matter. It is about the time that has passed and one point in the orbit is as good as another.

  • Prominence is a bit more complicated than that. It refers to the height of a mountain or hill's summit relative to the lowest contour line encircling it but containing no higher summit within it. Everest's prominence is actually still its height above sea level.

  • Nobody calls Mexicans or Canadians Americans. Nobody calls Brazilians or Peruvians Americans. They maybe North Americans and South Americans but American means someone from the United States. The Canadians and Mexicans I know would be offended if I called them American.
