  • This is exactly what the Fediverse is for; the sex industry tends to be quite aggressive about adopting new technologies and I expect they'll also do so here. (maybe even an entire alternative cloud of NSFW-friendly instances - people tend to be happy to have separate user accounts for porn consumption anyway)

  • You can think of 'cis' and 'trans' as meaning roughly 'this side' and 'other side'.

Before “cisgender” became a widely publicized term, about the only time I ever heard the term “cis” was discussing Cisalpine versus Transalpine Gaul in ancient Rome. (Cisalpine Gaul being northern Italy and Transalpine Gaul southern France, more or less - the parts of Gaul that were on the same side or the opposite side of the Alps from Rome).

  • If you’re going to speak ill of any of them, it should probably be the guy who was responsible for the deaths of the other four; when somebody murders his family and then himself, we don’t generally treat that person as a victim.

  • They had one founder who actually believed in that, he left in 2007 and is now deceased. (RIP) But they've been milking it ever since.

Huffman and Ohanian are both Y Combinator grifter types, Ohanian also happens to be married to Serena Williams yet rather than being content to live off his extremely wealthy wife's money he's spent the last few years touting crypto scams.

  • It’s unusual, and taps into some deep-seated fears - people imagine themselves trapped in a submarine running out of air, get seriously frightened, and start desperately hoping they make it out OK just because they don’t want to think about the alternative.

There’s also the Colossal Fuck Up angle - people love stories about incredibly stupid disasters because it makes them feel smart and competent. “I’d never get in a submarine that uses a shitty Logitech controller” they say, congratulating themselves on their foresight. (Even more satisfying when the victims include a billionaire, because those are the very best people to feel superior to)

  • I think we should let them consume Fediverse content but not create it.

If Meta proposes to let Instagram users follow people on Mastodon or whatever, that seems like a reasonable compromise - they get to keep people on their feeds viewing ads and we get more reach - but they shouldn't have the power to leave and take a large % of Fediverse content with them; if you want to make a post, you need to do so from a non-Meta-controlled instance in a non-Meta-controlled app.
