  • Fun fact: Tom Lehrer released all of his songs into the public domain (https://tomlehrersongs.com), so you can remix "The Elements" without any permission or royalties. (albeit maybe less significant for that particular song since the melody is from Gilbert & Sullivan anyway)

  • There'd definitely be a Barbie movie, it's just that all of the other girls in the Barbie movie would also be blond. And at one point a random Eastern-European-looking girl would die in some sort of Barbiemobile hit-and-run while Barbie and Ken giggled about it.

  • Threads seems to have achieved its immediate strategic goal of setting fire to zombie Twitter so that it'd stay dead; building it into an actual Twitter replacement could take years, and in the meanwhile there's plenty of time for Mastodon et al to keep hoovering up users too.

Personally, I don't post anything on Threads, and haven't really tried to obtain any followers there, but I do log on and view/like content from famous people I used to follow on Twitter in the hopes that if they get enough engagement on Threads they'll cut out Twitter altogether.

  • Germany was only 75 years old in 1941; for all we know it'd be some totally new country that ended up conquering everything. "Hail to Field Marshal Bing Bong Potatoman, ruler of our great glorious Zambonian Empire"

  • "Why does this hot dog have a bunch of seagull-beak-sized bite marks in it?"

"Bite marks? No, those are... steam holes, because all our food is so fresh that there's still steam coming out of it"

  • The way to bring Republicans to heel is for them to keep losing until they give up and try something else.

Between 1860 and 1912 exactly one Democrat - Grover Cleveland - managed to be elected president; Woodrow Wilson ended that streak in 1912 in no small part by breaking with his party to embrace progressive reforms (though the intra-party GOP split between TR and Taft also helped), and while Wilson was one of the worst racists to ever inhabit the White House, that embrace of progressivism nevertheless set the stage for the era of Democratic dominance under/after FDR.

  • I don't think they're tech-illiterate in general; there are certain things they don't understand because they've never really had to - filesystems, for instance - but that's no different from most Millennials not understanding CLIs.

  • Meanwhile, when you sign up for Threads your timeline is nothing but shitty influencers for the first few days, yet somehow they manage to press on through that without getting the vapors or whatever.

  • Hopefully, the rest of the EU holds the line on this, so that when the British come crawling back in a few years with their economy in tatters, they're forced to roll back all of this barbaric Tory social legislation as a condition of readmittance.

  • And the non-awful parents are probably already going to know something is up anyway, or have the sort of relationship where the kid is comfortable telling them.

So this law is specifically designed to help awful parents be more awful to their trans kids.
