  • Update Notes:
    Major notes:

    • Added a wood category to creative section, with !woodworking@lemmy.ca & !stick@sh.itjust.works.
    • Adjusted and added two categories to the entertainment and now, relaxation, section: growing with !gardening@lemmy.world and aww animals with a multitude of communities.
    • Added to existing sections: musicproduction, drawing, watercolor, sillydrawingrequests, horrormovies, videos@sopuli, mealtimevideos@cafe, videoessays, longformvideos, football (not sure how I didn't have that already), squaredcircle, and formula1.

    Minor notes:

  • Like others in the comments of the video, I'm surprised I hadn't heard of it earlier when it was still new. Then again, it may be even better to learn of it now so I can be excited by it being new to me and motivated to share stuff about it.

  • That's the corporate web: sterile, intrusive, manipulative, endless list of negative descriptors.

It's why you gotta take whatever's of value from it and put it elsewhere so you can get away from it as much as possible. Then spend more of your time using the public web intentionally for things that you enjoy and interest you, instead of allowing the corporate web to use you.

  • OpenRSS is a cool site that aims to produce RSS feeds for sites without them at no cost (some conditions apply, e.g. no account-walled/paywalled sites may be requested).

There's also the Feedbro add-on for Firefox (and other browsers) that can be used to check if a website has a RSS feed buried somewhere to add to your reader.

If you'd like to keep up with some non-commercial music, you could check out the Editor's Picks from ccMixter. Here's the direct feed link.

    In case of follow-up questions:

    • Mobile Apps: personally I'm mostly using Feeder on Android these days. I like to be able to see a lot of feed entries at once and this works best for me. I've tried apps like Read You and Nunti, but they weren't showing as much as I wanted.
      • Worth noting though, Nunti may be worth trying for its unique feature that tries to adjust your feeds to surface articles/entries that may be of more interest to you with offline systems.
    • Desktop/laptop: I'm still sort of searching on this one. For the moment I use Thunderbird, but it's not RSS-focused so it's more than I want from a reader.
  • My problem with them is this and YouTube's aggressive pushing of them in general and in the wrong places, like any device with a horizontal display (like when using a PC/laptop).

In my opinion vertical videos are better viewed on a vertical display (like a phone) and nowhere else, because everywhere else they look worse. Now that I'm thinking more of this though...I should see if any shmup people are showing off via shorts, 'cause that'd be a good fit.

  • Also if it's not that, it may be related to account language settings. Same deal, go into settings under profile/account and check that you have undetermined selected along with any other languages you want to be able to see.

    Edit:
Almost forgot, to select multiple languages you'll have to hold Ctrl and click each one in the Web UI (I think probably Photon as well).

  • No, sorry. To put it in your terms Lemmy would be a "platform" like how you describe Mastodon/Pixelfed.

The reason I suggested mentioning feddit.org instead is because it's what you're using and where someone else could sign up and join easily.

Mentioning Lemmy (or Mastodon/Pixelfed) doesn't tell people any site to sign up on, just what tech they're built with.

  • Focus on making posts you want to discuss or would want to see in communities that interest you and you want to see active.

While I'd argue it's better to shake off the platform thinking, the simple way to put it would be that you simply refer to the site you're using, feddit.org, when mentioning it to others. The umbrella term for these connected sites is either fediverse or the open social web, whichever you prefer. Each site like this connects with one another, but given formatting differences (Pixelfed is more image-focused, Mastodon is microblogging), posts shared between them try to display in ways fitting one another's format which can sometimes look rough.

You may see content from these other sites when browsing the main feed/front page set to All, which displays content from elsewhere that others on your site (feddit.org) have subscribed to.

  • This is funny and cool! I like the tiled/grid view even more after giving the demo a look. Not sure why but the instance sidebar as shown in the screenshot isn't displaying in the demo on my end (Firefox), but probably related to being a weekend whip-up.

Still with the spirit of this as you mention in another comment, would love to see more experimental and strange frontends. It'd be fun to see more of the different Lemmy instances/sites with unique looks to distinguish themselves.

  • You may want to be a little clearer. Are you after a mix of the old style Reddit interface alongside what RES added?

If so I can't remember what RES added, but I gather it's enough that the old style frontend may still feel lacking and the others aren't scratching that itch either.

  • I believe they're backseat moderating given my replies to a couple other posts here recently, where I reminded people of Rule 4, where we encourage people to provide some context, opinion, or adjustment of title to encourage discussion.

    See:

    1. Link posts should include some context/opinion in the body text when the title is unaltered, or be titled to encourage discussion.

The aim of this rule is not to be told how to think or what opinion one should have, but exactly what it says: encourage discussion. Article/document links without any context or indication of why OP's sharing it don't really do that. It's similar to someone randomly handing out flyers or pamphlets somewhere.

In any event both of you are violating rule 2, and this makes OP's second time this week doing this, so I'll be handling this accordingly.

  • Unfortunately this has Denuvo to restrict your use of your purchase. Was hoping after their first title getting criticized for this they may have changed course on that, but appears not.

Would recommend waiting till that's removed, maybe in a GOG release.
