  • It is amazing how quickly the elite is closing ranks around the Trump government this time around. This includes essentially all major media, billionaires and even some Democrats. Completely different from the first term when we immediately saw a major resistance movement.

Realistically he will end the Ukraine war (since Ukraine has to cede land without US support), and it’s likely that investment will skyrocket (as tariffs make it too costly to import). The same will happen to inflation and inequality (but we won’t see that in the media). Let’s not even think about minorities and women. My worst fear of competently-looking facism may well be on the way.

  • Yes I totally understand that there are cold places on earth, but I feel like few here understand the meaning of the term major city./s

More seriously I am sure that 90 percent of the world’s population lives in areas where heat pumps are the most efficient method of heating/cooling.

  • -40 sounds insane. There are very few major cities with such cold temperatures. Outside of such extreme locations, heat pumps are very competitive to gas heating if not simply cheaper.

  • Yes but in France the elite does not control the narrative the way it does in the US. BLM were mostly peaceful protestors against police violence. Yet, a Fox News viewer only saw the few violent excesses.

  • I think the issue with riots is the ability of the rioters to control the narrative. For instance, Trump was able to eventually control the narrative around Jan 6, through Fox News and non-traditional media, and so this riot did not end up hurting him. But the left does not have such an ecosystem, and so riots/protests are always interpreted for the left, instead of by the left.

I think this challenge is difficult to overcome, and in any case I am absolutely sure that the people in charge (especially when Trump takes power), believe in their ability to shape the narrative. they will be much happier with riots than with a calm trial in which the jury acquits.

  • Yes but riots are good for the elite. The media will blame the rioters, and most voters will agree or not care. Look at what happened to BLM. Do you think that helped the cause?

  • Let’s assume a jury trial does happen. The murder is pre-meditated so the DOJ will have to demand capital punishment. Now consider the case where the jury does not convict. What happens to the lives of CEOs (I.e. the members of the Trump cabinet)? That’s a crazy risk to take.

  • Unfortunately I am identifying more and more with the Russians. It’s becoming increasingly clear that most of my fellow citizens are not interested in the fact that we are slipping into autocracy/idiocracy, and it is also affecting my motivation to do something about it. Maybe in 20 years I will be so resigned to the situation that I allow them to send my son for slaughter.

Sorry, really depressed in the moment. Also, Slavs Ukraine for setting the best example possible at the moment.

  • I worry a lot more about Dems appeasing the GOP at this moment. Unlike Trumps first election, there is now basically no resistance, and there’s already infighting among Democrats. Someone who unites the party must stand up now, or I don’t see any improvement in the midterms.

  • The problem I have with this point of view is that it describes the DNC as an enormous entity, when in reality they are a small organisation that mostly gets its financing from individual campaigns (especially the presidential campaign).

The issue the progressives face is not the DNC but systemic issues with politics in the US. A big issue is the reliance on campaign contributions by the rich. Another issue is the media environment. The DNC is just a tiny cog in a much larger machine.
