  • I don't care how good the game looks, or how much I want it, or how deep the sale is.

I dont buy games from EA, or Ubisoft, and I don't buy anything from Nintendo or Sony.

Companies that actively hate its customers won't see a dime of my money.

Also Nestle, for what I hope are obvious reasons.. but its hard to avoid it since it hides itself in so many subsidiaries.

  • Yep, this has been my experience too.

People shit on windows, but it was easy to navigate, and generally made an effort to keep you from breaking it and you pretty much never had to enter a command line for anything as an average user.

Linux troubleshooting, especially for new people, is going to become a much bigger problem as time goes on because any searched solution basically boils down to copy and pasting stuff into terminal and hoping its 1)still relevant and 2) doesnt break everything worse. Which is probably why so many immutable distros have popped up, to give that windows level of protection.

As for hostility? Its still there, in pockets. Not so much on lemmy from what i've seen, but it still exists elsewhere.. but it is significantly better overall than it was 10+ years ago, where questions about problems were seemingly treated as insults against the prophet and were responded to with great aggression, and often racist undertones.

  • Once, 2ish years ago I think by now? I was trying to clean up all the shit I installed to compile something because it wasnt available on apt, had a repository, or had a .deb (I was on ubuntu at the time).

I mistyped something and ended up removing Python. Got no warning, no red text, no nothing. It just uninstalled it as if it was nothing.

I rebooted, and learned that a lot of fucking shit depends on python. because I no longer had a DE and could only boot into a terminal. after 2 hours of trying to unfuck it, I just used a live cd to save what files I could and reinstalled.

Oh, and I never got the program compiled and working. and never tried again on the fresh install. I dont even remember what it was now. Something for gaming, probably.

  • Ah yes.. forever and again, the siren song of children being used as an excuse for draconian, rights eroding legislation.. its amazing how much responsibility parents have shirked to the state as they replace babysitters with cellphones and tablets.
