  • I'm not familiar with NUCs, So I dont know if that affects anything.. but I've been playing Starfield since it unlocked on Linux, so theres no issue with at least the linux part if that helps you with anything.

  • I concur with pretty much everything you said, though I will say my FPS has been significantly better than yours. You got an nvidia card? I heard they are bugged with bad performance and waiting for a driver update.

Game, while less critically fucky than previous Betehsda efforts (No doubt thanks to Microsoft dragging Bethesda into QA kicking and screaming), still carry the heavy stink of gamebryo, with classic bugs that have been there for decades.. Like items/NPCs falling through floors for no reason.

I dont mind the very plane world map on random gen planets and shit, but how the fuck am i supposed to navigate New Atlantis or Neon on a field of useless floating dots and a collapsing fast travel icon stack?

edit I want to add that the autosaving fucking sucks, too. Especially since i got set back by a significant margin due to the crash i just had.

  • yeah, the game stinks of gamebryo, but.. I've only had one crash so far.. Who would have that that all it would take to make a less buggy bethesda game was the entire QA department of one of the biggest companies on the planet.

  • I mean, the steamdeck is running on an APU, so its not going to run 2023 games like butter at high settings.

But on a home PC, with better (and dedicated) hardware, the game runs pretty good.

I've got Starfield on ultra settings and, so far.. outside of New Atlantis, my FPS has stayed maxed at vsync, and even in New Atlantis, its still very playable.

  • Nope.

Some people in my family tried to teach me when I was young, but I didnt immediately and perfectly absorb the knowledge of how to master it from the atmosphere, so obviously I was just a piece of shit that was trying to ruin their transmission/car/life and cant appreciate a single fucking thing anyone does for me and that i'm an ungrateful piece of shit and to just get the fuck out of the car and never ask them for anything again (not that I asked them to teach me stick in the first place.. They insisted, i suspected then, and continue to do so to this day, that it was just a trap.)

Which really helped my desire to drive, much less drive stick.

  • I've always heard cleanroom, since you keep your coders completely isolated from the investigation team so there can be no question of code pollinating across, Just documentation to be reimplemented in a unique and different way.

  • you need GPS to go to the place youv'e been multiple times, because you have GPS. Your brain does a funny thing where it doesnt feel like it has to remember shit when you have the answer infront of you on a computer/phone/device cause it is basically using that device as its short term memory.

  • couldnt they do the thing where one team analyzes the leaked code and documents functions.

and a nother, clean room team, creates independent fresh code to achieve the same results as the original?

I mean, clean room activity like that has a strong precedent, going back to EA vs Sega at least. where EA stole a sega genesis dev kit, had one team document the functions, had another team independently create code to execute those functions, and made their own dev kid and put out non-approved sega carts (which is why the EA sega carts were taller and had the yellow plastic tag)

Sega sued and EA won due the clean room engineering and sega and EA came to some kind of sweetheart deal/comrpromise/settlement.

  • Lutris can let you log into your GOG account and install games no issue.

I dont know how it handles updates, but thats only an issue if you're playing a new game, if you're just playing old games like Arcanum, its no issue.
