  • A Chinese woman who was swept out to sea while swimming at a Japanese beach was rescued 37 hours later after drifting in an inflatable swim ring more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) in the Pacific Ocean, officials said Thursday.

  • I've started buying DVDs and Blu-ray again after years of not doing so because there have been multiple instances of me purchasing a movie on some streaming platform and then it no longer being available. Also, there have been even more instances where it's less expensive to buy the physical product and then rip it than it is to buy the digital copy.

  • As a long time Wolverine fan who saw X-Men (2000) on day one and got sick of superhero movies like a decade ago, no it won't.

We'll see it, and we may love it, but we'll still think that you ruined comic books and comic book movies with the overproduction of generic content.

  • I'm increasingly convinced that the corporate/authoritarian movement in the US will not be overcome until heads literally roll. I'm not endorsing this. But I don't see another way forward when we have elites who are immune from any sort of ethics guidelines or having to meet the needs of constituencies.

  • I can't see their tag without taking the time to pull up their profile. Not sure if it's different on Lemmy, but I'm on mbin. It would be a nice feature to be able to see which instance a commenter is coming from without pulling up their profile.

  • I do find it rather odd how we Millennials and Gen X had little trouble understanding sarcasm on the internet, overall, but over the last couple of years there's suddenly this huge push that we need to use '/s' to make it extra super obvious. Does Gen Z not use sarcasm?

  • I have to agree with the other commenters. A laptop generally does not last a decade or longer, so you're probably better off just replacing it and are fortunate it has done well for so long. If for some reason you want to work on it, it sounds like this is a motherboard problem, such as the IC. I've never replaced a motherboard or its components on a laptop, but it should theoretically be possible.

  • I also prefer the old style heat/AC bar over the modern style where you set a temperature number. What's the point of setting a temperature number when the car doesn't actually maintain or output that particular temperature? For example, if it's 70° out and I set my temperature control to 70°, it might blast cold air at me or hot air. It's a crapshoot. The old style bar, you just set how warm or cool the air was that's coming out of the vents and it didn't change based on external temperature. So much simpler.

But yeah, non-physical buttons are both inconvenient and hazardous.
