  • Everything is political because that's the definition of the word politics. Defining the status quo as apolitical is propaganda, and not everyone wants to deal with you spewing propaganda all over the place. Especially when it's the same propaganda used by transphobes and repeating it will benefit transphobes.

Also I'm allergic to grass. I get all itchy. And if it's been freshly mowed, I get a horrible runny nose. Maybe try a non-ableist way of phrasing things next time? There's also sunlight allergies, agoraphobia, mobility issues, and executive function disorders like autism, anxiety, and depression that can make it hard to touch grass.

  • I accept the existence of the fact that some people believe politics means controversy. But I don't accept the morality, justice, or rightness of that fact. It's a bad thing that people believe politics means controversy. It should be challenged. Nothing good can come of agreeing with the propaganda of transphobes.

  • I've never been to Hexbear. Today a hexbear user asked me to join and I expressed skepticism because I heard that those people are genocide deniers. But they are clearly trans-friendly and you are clearly not, so I believe I have been persuaded.

  • Actually, those Hexbear people were all on my side on this, and about half of the Beehaw people. None of the Blahaj people were on my side. So based on direct observation, I would say that Hexbear seems very trans friendly, Beehaw seems somewhat trans friendly, and Blahaj seems very trans unfriendly. I created an account on Blahaj to see if it would be a good place to be open about my gender and sexuality. Ada tells me, the answer is no. And when I tell others about my experience, Hexbear users flood my post to tell me the way I was treated was wrong. I think I like Hexbear.

  • You've misunderstood my point because you think that politics means bad news. Politics doesn't mean bad news. Politics means group decision making. The belief that politics means bad news was created by transphobes and has been used to attack trans people, and will get trans people hurt if you spread it. It's harmful propaganda. Please don't spread it.

I agree with you, everyone here should have the right to avoid reading about controversy. And given that "politics means bad news" is a controversial statement, I don't think anyone here should be saying it.

  • Your analysis is all well and good and there's a whole lot of content I agree with there, but you are changing the subject. The subject was the meaning of the word political, not whether people have the right to avoid reading controversy. Everyone on both sides of this issue actually agrees that people have the right to avoid reading controversy. I spent the original thread telling Ada that I wanted to be free from reading controversial takes like "politics is anything I disagree with", and Ada spent the thread telling me that she wanted Abigail to be free from reading controversial takes like "politics is group decision making". We both had the same goal: protect people from controversy. The disagreement was simply the meaning of the word political. Ada wanted an echo chamber where everyone agrees that politics is "anything I disagree with", and I wanted a safe space where we don't say transphobic things like that. Which, I am aware, is functionally the same as an echo chamber but I don't know how else to phrase that

  • Claiming things that are transphobic (like this) are not tranphobic is harmful to trans people. This tells us that Blahaj is transphobic. It doesn't allow trans rights or people who protect the trans community like I am doing.

  • I was new to the instance and wanted to familiarise myself with the topical issues that were occuring. Memory consolidation had not yet begun when I encountered transphobia and got into a drama about it. Here are some articles explaining memory consolidation: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/neuroscience/memory-consolidation

The hexbear drama was less interesting to me than the transphobia.

  • I'm not a guy, I'm VERY openly nonbinary. FFS, my previous username was PM_ME_FAT_ENBIES and I told anyone who asked about it that I'm gay. I also didn't call you or anyone else autistic at any point. Jeepers creepers, no wonder I got a transphobic vibe from you, you misgender anyone you disagree with. Is this your usual response to being called transphobic? Just confirming it out in the open?

  • And as I said in that thread, you can't simultaneously hold the views that discourse should be opt-in, and that spreading transphobia isn't discourse. Nobody has the right to hate speech in a public forum without being challenged on it. And what Abigail said isn't hate speech, but it is speech that will harm trans people. And Abigail's repeated misgendering of me when I am very openly nonbinary certainly paints their refusal to change their language in a much harsher light

  • …what if I just don’t like seeing news that only makes me feel angry or bad on my feed.

That's not the meaning of the word politics. Politics means group decision making. Every group is constantly making decisions, like "Where should we eat? Did we enjoy that movie? Isn't this animal cute? How are we going to deliver the client's product in two weeks?" Those are politics, and they are also the bread and butter of human socialisation. This other thing you're talking about, bad news, that's not what politics is. Sure, bad news is political, but that's because everything is political.

The belief that bad news and politics are the same thing has been used to justify transphobia, sexism, and racism. Because the belief leads people to hate politics, and that means any bad actor can (correctly) call something they don't like political and stoke hatred. Trans people are political because everything is political. There will always be a way to paint trans people as political because it's true. So if trans people are political and most people hate politics, then all a bad actor has to do in order to justify hatred of trans people is call us political while being dishonest about what politics means.

That's why dishonesty and mistruth around the definition of politics causes transphobia. That's why hating politics is transphobic.

  • Well, I don't know too much about the Russian Ukraine war orphans controversy, but I had a discussion about the Ughur genocide two years ago in which me and my partner ended up reaching the same conclusions you've put there. And I had a russian ex-girlfriend who said Stalin was BFFs with the jews and that the Jews conducted a genocide of the slavs during the societ union, and I don't trust a word out of her mouth so your views look correct there too. I guess I'll explore Hexbear when I have the time

  • Trans people are political, whether we want to be or not. When we start adopting this "hating politics" language, we implicitly accept the mechanisms that oppress us and make transphobia easier for other people. Hating politics is transphobic.
