  • Yeah, and the author all but freely admits that. But they're apparently willing to throw all that away to have it "feel like everyone’s there."

Maybe this is me being uncharitable, but to be blunt it sounds like he just wants to feel like he's sitting at the cool kids' table.

  • There's a difference between "America has serious problems, let's get to work fixing them" and "America is inherently evil and can't be saved (and you're an idiot at best, a right-wing plant at worst for thinking otherwise)". The former fires people up to start making progess, the latter shuts people down or causes them to tune out of politics altogether.

And to be blunt, this particular meme feels like it's falling more in the second category than the first, at least to me.

  • America's done some fucked up things in the last 20 years, don't get me wrong, but absolutely nothing comes even close to the horrors of the genocidal war of imperial expansion Putin's currently waging in Ukraine. There's absolutely no moral equivalency between the modern US and Putin's Russia.

  • Also, Chat GPT at least still writes at the level of a somewhat talented ninth grader. Its prose is stilted, and the way it structures essays and stories is super formulaic.

It's absolutely not at the level it can replace a talented human writer yet. (I have no doubt that day is coming, probably sooner than we think, but it's not here yet.)

So publishers making the switch will see the quality of their content drop, and with it the number of clicks / revenue they get. Enough to offset the salaries of all the writers they fired? Probably depends on the publication. For clickbait farms, probably not, but the higher quality the readers are used to the more the publishers stand to lose.

  • Also, most people bringing up "but the Ukrainian Nazis!!!!" are arguing in bad faith (and a lot are fascists themselves, lol). So rather than wasting your time giving a nuanced overview of the far right in Ukraine, Russia, and the West to someone who's just going to ignore it and reply in bad faith anyways, it's way easier to just say "Zelensky's Jewish, lol" and move on with your life.

(To be 100% clear: I DO NOT THINK THE PERSON YOU REPLIED TO IS ARGUING IN BAD FAITH. This comment is more a blanket generalization, not about this specific interaction.)

  • Also, given the lack of a clear successor, Putin's death would likely lead to a power vacuum and infighting-- which means they'll be too busy fighting each other to focus on attacking us.
