  • Maybe I'm entering the cranky old women yelling at kids to get off her lawn phase of my life-- but why are all the TikTok challenges always something ridiculously dangerous? (Emphasis on "ridiculous")

  • Yep, they define social fucking democrats as being "centrists", while simultaneously trying to convince you far-right extremists are poor misguided souls who'll make good allies to help us take on the true enemy, those damn dirty libs. Then they're absolutely shocked when the first thing the far-right does when the libs are defeated is to stab them in the back and seize power for themselves. :/

  • Always a good time to remind people the OG version of the laptop conspiracy in 2019 was as much about dragging Ukraine through the mud as well as the Bidens! And I'd be willing to bet anything it was to turn Republican opinion against Ukraine, so the base wouldn't be upset when dear leader turned a blind eye to Putin invading them in his second term.

  • And the willfully ignorant morons flocking to that site still somehow manage to delude themselves that it's not going to become an alt-right breeding ground. Even though that's true for, oh, I don't know, literally all of Meta's other products.

  • As an elder Zoomer, can confirm. Seeing first-hand the horrific effects social media has had on so many of my IRL friends' mental health-- and how it's utterly decimated IRL communities-- makes me want to cut it out of my life as much as possible.

  • Tell ya what: don't use a sexist metaphor next time, and I promise not to overreact. ;)

  • Can we not do the whole "women are objects to be ranked based on physical appearance only and fought over as prizes" thing, please? That prom queen has agency of her own-- who's to say she's even into the "winner", let alone that their personalities are in any way compatible? Maybe (assuming she's interested in men and looking for a relationship) she'd rather be with a guy who isn't hypercompetitive, who's more laid back and easygoing?

Which brings me to the other problem with your metaphor: what's "winning"? Someone could be doing well by society's metrics and be miserable, because their current lifestyle isn't the right fit for them. Someone else could be a total failure by society's metrics, but perfectly content with their life the way it is. Who's the real winner there? (Spoiler alert: it's the second person).

  • Between the dogwhistle about wanting to end our support for Ukraine, and complaining about the IRA-- the largest climate change bill passed by any nation in human history-- because it "cost too much", I'm starting to wonder if the guy you're replying to is on the left at all.

EDIT: Just checked their post history, and yep, they're openly a conservative.

  • Because they fundamentally don't understand how left-leaning people think, which means they don't understand what we want in a candidate. These are the same geniuses who convinced Kanye to run for president in 2020 because they thought he'd peel away the Black vote from the Democrats just because he was Black. (Did I mention they're all racist AF, too?)

  • Also, OP's ignoring that Kennedy was also a progressive hero, too. The primary was progressive vs. progressive-- which is part of the reason it's remembered today as the poster child of pointless infighting that did nothing but benefit the opposition. I've literally never heard anyone here in the States have OP's take on the primary until this thread.

  • From Ted Kennedy, who was also extremely progressive for his time. 1980 was progressive vs progressive (which is part of how Reagan was able to win so decisively in the general, by portraying himself as being a centrist-- even though nothing could be further from the truth).

  • My guess is it's to offset the lack of other benefits-- health care being a huge one-- that you lose when you sign up to be a gig worker, not a full-time worker.

And we already have different minimum wages for at least one industry: servers at restaurants. The economy isn't going to collapse if we put gig workers in their own category, too.

  • If your business can't afford to pay its workers a living wage without going bust-- then it deserves to go bust.

  • That was “moderate” party leaders trying to sabotage a progressive at any cost.

Wait, what? I thought Jimmy Carter was considered really progressive for his time. And Ted Kennedy wasn't some perfect progressive hero, he had some pretty major blemishes on his record like Chappaquiddik. So I always saw it as more pointless infighting than any kind of centrist-vs-progressive showdown like 2016.

Then again, my parents were in high school when all this was going down, so my knowledge is obviously pretty limited, lol.

  • Don't you know if you make a single mistake in your entire life, you're morally tainted forever and therefore lose all right to criticize anyone or anything for any reason, you dirty, impure sinner! You should be ashamed of yourself! Now excuse me while I go commit my seventh puppy genocide of the day.

  • Jimmy Carter did-- Ted Kennedy challenged him for the 1980 presidential nomination. The result was them doing so much damage to each other that the ultimate winner of the primary (Carter) came out battered and bruised, giving Reagan the edge he needed to win the general. And we all know how well that worked out for the planet. (Spoiler alert: horrifically.)

  • I remember hearing about a high-profile case where the AI would dock points if someone's resume listed them as participating in women's sports as an extracurricular, while giving extra points if it listed them as participating in men's sports.

Also, bias doesn't necessarily have to come from happenstance. Unfortunately, humans tend to have unconcious (or, sometimes, not-so-unconcious) biases against women and people of color. There was a study where researchers sent identical resumes to a random group of recruiters-- but half of the resumes had a male name and half had a female name.

They found that both male and female recruiters were more likely to rate the resumes with the male name higher and be more likely to recommend they be advanced to the next round of interviews. IIRC, similar studies have found similar results if you give the resumes a "Black sounding" name versus a "white sounding" name.

So if you train an AI on your own company's hiring data-- which is likely to be tainted by the unconcious bias of your own recruiters and hiring managers-- then the AI might pick up on that and replicate it in its results.

  • As if the piss party didn't already suck enough, now they're playing politics with the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. Hoping Poland can finally give them the boot in the elections later this year.
