  • I work at a hospital and most of the patients there are definitely older than dirt people getting surgeries just to extend their life a few years or even months. Most of the time it is family members making those decisions because they don't want or know how to say goodbye. We have had patients that effectively died, but the family insists on keeping their organs alive with machines in the hopes that they wake up.

As for the meaning of life? I think it is 100% to entertain ourselves until death. Even if there was a greater meaning created by some deity, we're probably not able to understand it anymore than a donkey could understand calculus. I personally could never trust any human to tell me who or what god is and/or wants. And god has yet to reveal theirself to me...

  • When I worked in retail, I'd have customers ask me to raise or lower the temperature in the store I worked at. "Of course!" I'd say and then disappear into the back area and play on my phone for a couple of minutes. I'd come back out and ask if it was starting to feel better, to which they'd reply, "I feel it working already, thank you!"

  • Seek and iNaturalist is for all animals and plants. They use your photos to track data about the species you take pictures of, mostly just where you found them. It also keeps track of all of the species you've found and gives you challenges to find certain species depending on where you are in the world. If the AI fails to identify something, your photo can be peer reviewed by other users.

  • This happened to me. I went through the payment process and finished on a confirmation page. A week later I got a notice that I didn't pay and was being fined. I looked at my bank statements and sure enough the charge never went through. I didn't make a big deal of it because the fine was barely more than what I would've been charged anyway.

  • I don't know anything about mailbox.org, but I'm sure it's way less sketchy than Google. It's just interesting you would praise their free video conferences after posting "if you don't pay with money, you pay with data."

  • I saw him do a show in Florida and he started bashing republicans during a joke when a bunch of people in the audience started booing and leaving. He calls them all dipshits and dives into doing a bunch of jokes further questioning their intelligence before winning back the crowd. It was very impressive.

  • I don't think it's necessary to compare yourself to others here. The consumption goal should just be to consume less and every effort makes a difference. If you eat red meat every day, then try every other day. If you already do that, try once a week. If you feel you can consume even less then have it as a rare treat or just cut it out entirely.

  • I just recently started Don Quixote and have only just made it into part 2, but he doesn't really strike me as a hero. Maybe in his own head he thinks so. He's certainly the protagonist, but from what i've read so far, he's been rather antagonistic towards the people he interacts with.

  • I went to Universal around last Christmas and they had an awesome drone show. I had never seen anything like it and didn't even know it was a thing. 100% better than a fireworks display.

  • Hi, I am an American and will be visiting your country very soon! I've never been outside of the US and know very little Spanish. I'm going with a family member who is getting dental work done and well be in San Jose. We're very excited for the trip, do you have any tips for first timers?

  • I really enjoy Flightless Bird. It's a New Zealand journalist that moved to America to report on all of the things he finds strange about the US. As an American I have fun listening his fascination of all the weird things here especially when it comes to corporate america.
