  • It's one of the only platforms that doesn't actively suppress left wing views with its algorithm.

I'd be fine with EU style regulations on social media, or depending on how it's written, a more broader ban of social media in general. But banning tiktok only will do nothing to address the concerns you raised. Instead it just funnels people into social media ecosystems that greatly favor right wing sentiment and allow easy access for the 3 letter agencies.

It's about maintaining the ability to manufacturer consent. Tiktok presents a hurdle to that.

  • It’s about forcing all students into public school when they aren’t all on the same level when it comes to intelligence or capability to learn

Huh? Don't most public schools offer various levels of the same subject for this reason? Like remedial, honors, AP, etc. In what way is this problem solved by private schools? Unless you're implying that home schooling solves this problem, which yeah sure if one of the parents works full time teaching their children and also has a high level of education themself as well as the relevant skills. Not something that can actually be scaled out across the country. And history has shown that homeschooling typically leads to inferior education.

The schools that spend the least per student have the best scores

Yeah that doesn't sound right at all. You got a source?

  • You can do that with GPL. It prevents massive corporations from essentially leaching off your hard work but can still be free value to everyone else.

  • No one is saying it will. Lots of folks in leftist spaces advocate for getting in the streets, unionizing your workplace, and organizing in socialist organizations. If you're a socialist, it's time to find a socialist organization to join. Can't find any local chapters? Start your own. Don't like any local organizations? Join then and work to improve them.

  • Fucking hell, didn't know about that. Someone should drag that fucking piece of shit into Lake Michigan.

At least there's the Haymarket Memorial out in Forest Park.

  • Being Nazis wasn't a deal breaker for America. Nazis were filling out the Madison square garden at the time.

  • I mean, I sort of did, but only because OP mentioned the series by name giving me something to google. Before seeing the comment I had no clue this was referencing an anime.

  • Do I have to start watching anime so that I don't become a cultural hermit?

  • Ehh, I disagree. A counter example; I'd bet money that folks in England know more about our country than we do theirs, especially when it comes to politics and current issues. I'm pretty sure most Americans wouldn't be able to name the British PM or even what party is in power there. Everyone there probably knows Biden is the president and that he is a Democrat.

Also, Al Jazeera publishes in English, I don't think language is the primary barrier. American media just generally doesn't cover foreign affairs all that much (and when they do, they generally do a shit job).

  • Congratulations, y'all deserve that and more!

  • From the ANSWER coalition? Yeah I doubt it. ANSWER has close ties to the PSL. The folks who were demonstrating with ANSWER against the Iraq War are now demonstrating with ANSWER against the genocide of the Palestinians. They're not Democrat loyalists.

  • Are you using a vibes-based threat model?

  • Probably something about not having all your eggs in one basket.

  • Yeah I agree for the most part. I will say I think moderation can have problems though (example: Reddit for a while did that thing where they would ban 1 fascist subreddit for inciting violence against minorities and then also ban 10 leftist subreddits for people saying John Brown was based).

But I think it depends on how the platform is designed and how moderation is implemented. Lemmy's implementation is some of the best I've seen.

But I do agree, some form of moderation is necessary.

  • Yeah, I think the amount of non-fascist people has gone down since Musk bought Twitter. I anticipate it will continue with that trend. The process is not instant, especially when the platform is as pervasive as Twitter. But I think Twitter is a good demonstration of why moderation is a good thing.

And yeah, moderation is often not implemented in a perfect way. But I think Lemmy's transparency (mod logs) approach is an improvement over traditional moderation.

  • Sure but without moderation you're left with a Nazi echo-chamber. When there's no mechanism to kick out the Nazis, most normal people will leave over time. A platform that allows Nazis just becomes a Nazi platform.
